What is the issue?

Everywhere around the world, there are people that are seriously struggling with access to proper healthcare. There are many different reasons as to why this is an issue, which truly makes it that much harder to solve. A major issue currently is costs. Firstly, a lot of people can’t afford the healthcare they need. A large amount of people end up either ignoring their symptoms, missing refill dates on important prescriptions, and not getting the proper care they need because of how expensive these things are. Secondly, certain countries can't afford to have the materials they need to properly help they’re citizens. Whether it’s not having proper technology, or even something as simple as bandages and cleaning supplies, there are a ton of clinics and hospitals that aren’t properly equipped to deal with certain medical issues.

Why is this important?

This is important because this issue has been apparent for such a long period of time, with little improvement. Certain “solutions” that have been implemented haven’t actually worked out in a ton of places. It’s important that more people are educated on this topic so that hopefully real change can be seen. In addition to this, this issue is affecting REAL people everywhere. Millions of people every year are dying because of this, it’s critical that we do whatever we can to help this. It has been an issue for far too long.

Everyone everywhere gets affected by this issue. It’s practically impossible to pinpoint as so many people simply don’t say anything about it, as well as this can happen to people randomly. One minute they can afford their checkups, but next they have a medical issue that is simply out of their budget. But, more developing countries are faced with this issue as not only can the citizens not afford proper healthcare, the country can’t either.

Brief history

Access to healthcare has been an issue for years, but over the years the main causes have varied. Originally, the amount of clinics and hospitals were simply very limited. Meaning if you lived in an area without a clinic nearby, you would have to find a way to get to the next closest one. Which could be miles and miles for someone living in a more rural area. And if one didn’t have a car, they would be either biking that distance or possibly even walking. Which is truly difficult if one is sick. Next, a major issue was race. A quite large amount of people would be turned down from getting proper healthcare simply because they weren’t white. No matter how sick someone was, a doctor would simply say “no” to treating them because of their race, this is still a huge issue today. Nowadays, we’re faced with issues such as cost, transportation, social determinants (such as race), education, office hours, and location.

Policies

There are a few policies put in place regarding healthcare access, but the ones I’d like to shine light upon are the programs that are meant to encourage more clinical practice in areas that lack such. Since 1965 the US has put programs in low income places to encourage people to take up medical care. These programs have been seen to be effective, although of course it isn’t enough. These programs are a major step into hopefully solving some of the issues that contribute to inadequate healthcare. Like stated previously, for years and years people have been struggling with getting healthcare near them. This issue is an incredible first step into resolving that issue, or at least improving it. This also is beneficial to the people within these areas as it gets them jobs. The benefits from these programs are truly incredible, so hopefully this will end up having a major positive impact.
