Loop Plane Engineering Reflection by Carrie-Ann Weaknecht

Hello, engineers! I would like you to create a post to tell about what worked and what didn't with your loop plane modifications. What do you think is the explanation for why those modifications worked or not? Overall, I'm looking for you to tell me what you learned from this activity.

When I was engineering my loop plane many designs did not work. When modifying the original plane first I took off the front wing. That did not play as well as I hoped but it still worked how I thought it would. The plane went down, far but down stopping the plane from reaching it's farthest position possible. Next I took off the back wing which also did not work, It just went a few inches then drag took over and stopped it. After that I put on a wing that was the size of a front wing and put it on. This gave amazing results almost 7 meters which was very far on loop plane standards. Next I added a same size loop on the opposite side of the existing loop. This did okay but not very good at all. Then I added another loop in the middle, also okay but not great. Finally I added triangles to the middle sides of the plane this did terrible and caught the wind fast. I decided to scrap everything and go back to the plane with one loop the size of a front loop. Another loop plane extraordinaire like all of us had an idea to add weights of paper clips. The teacher of this group said weights were a good idea and that it would be a great idea to add weights therefore I added weights and then my plane flew the farthest. Seven meters but with the possibility of farther because the plane flew seven meters then crashed into the wall hard meaning there was more momentum so the plane could have flew farther.
I learned overall that weight stabilizes and makes it harder for the plane to tilt and be exposed to drag and air stopping the plane. Also I learned that the more simple the plane is the farther or higher the plane goes depending on how you throw it. This is what I have learned from this activity.

fly far.So then I realized that in line when I was right about to throw my air plane.I saw that Tariq had an air plane that went the farthest and one of the things he had was that he had no front loop.I tried that and it did work but mine still did not go as far as Tariq's when I did that. Also before that Mrs.Weaknecht said that the Fogelsville students added paperclips to their model for a weight and they went very far so she asked us to try that so we did and they all worked better at least my plane made a improvement.A few days ago I saw that when Ryan made 1 loop on top of a loop his air plane barley went more than maybe 3 meters so i took that off too. That worked really good. When I left that plane like that I realized that my farthest distance was 7 meters so I had reached how much I had to have my plane fly.

I first made an extra wing set but that didn't work because the wind caught it and made it go different places or directions then I wanted it to go. I took out the extra wing set and also removed one wing. It went in the direction I wanted and also a little bit further. Then I added more straws which made the plane travel further. I next removed two straws which caused it to travel a little straighter and further. Later on I added 2 paper clips to the bottom of the plane. This caused the plane to travel in the correct and it also traveled further. Here are most of the things I learned. 1. If you don't succed try again. 2. A engineer needs to have great patience because it takes a long ting to make things work the way you want them to. 3. I found out about drag and how weight helps stop drag. 4. I found about the aviation alphabet. 5. We found out how to convert meters to centmeters.

First I simply put the back wing closer to the front wing, the reason I did that exchangement was because I thought the air was weakening when the air went through the back loop. Therefore, when I moved the back loop closer to the front loop, the air was still strong. For this reason, the air could push the front loop towards the front. Because of this, the plane will go further.(This idea worked causing the plane to go six meters and thirty-two centimeters.) Some things that I encountered that were inaccurate were that I put the loops not exactly aligned from each other. Therefore, all the air that is coming from the back loop is not directly going through the front loop. After the error has been resolved, I had a theory that adding more weight would make the plane go further. Because of this I decided to add a paper clip. After that, I decided to test how far the plane would go with the new adjustments. The new and improved plane went six meters and fifty centimeters. But then I thought, "What if you add even more weight?" So I added one more paper clip, and once again, I tested out the plane, this time I saw that the results were thirty centimeters more, which means the plane went six meters and seventy centimeters. What I learned from this activity was the force from your hand only starts the plane, but drag is the one who makes the plane go forward, backward, or any other direction the plane is going. I also learned that, putting the wing closer to the other wing is more helpful, and more the weight added the further the plane will go.

My enitial plan didn't work because I wanted to add propellers in the wing so it could be twice as powerful, but the air wasn't pushing the propeller at all, so it was actually unnecessary weight, so instead of going 3-5 meters like my basic model, it went 1-2 meters. Then, I tried adding straws to the plane, that didn't work. The straw idea didn't work because the air was going straight through it and brought the whole plane down because the straws were to thin. The straw idea ended up going 3-4 meters. My idea that worked was adding actual plane like wings to the middle. I think the plane like wing idea worked because in the straw idea, the air was going straight through it, then ended up bringing the plane down, since I did this, the air wasn't rushing through and it was more balanced, this idea went 5-6 and a half meters. The only thing I didn't figure out in this activity is why the paper clips added to my plane made it go less farther, the only reason I could think of is how good I threw the plane, but then I did try throwing it many times. Some of the other things I learned about in this activity is how drag could effect the plane, how to convert with decimal points, how to find averages, how to convert meters to centimeters and centimeters to meters, the aviation alphabet, and how to engineer!

I first added two more straws which i thought would give it a longer distance because it could slide and also i think Tariq's went farthest because he only had 1 loop and it had weights which i believe was a really good idea. i think mine went well but since it had to much weight, it did not stay up to long.

The basic plane, the one with a rear wing and a small wing ,worked, but I wanted the loop plane to go faster.I first thought that I could have all 8 loop wings, but then,I didn't think it was the best idea.Suddenly,at that moment,an idea came to me.Wedges cut things. If I rolled up construction paper like kids do to blow in,it is kind of pointy at the end.I could tape it to the front of my loop plane to cut through the air.I also added a triangular wing to the top of my plane. As a matter of fact, it worked! In this activity,I learned how to change centimeters to meters and meters to centimeters, decimals, the aviation alphabet, and that adding weight works better, for when everyone added paperclips,it went farther.
