How is COVID-19 Affecting Farmers?

Many of the nation’s largest farms with no buyers for more than half their crops, are destroying millions of pounds of fresh goods that they can no longer sell. In the United States, there are two primary supply chains: one for household consumption and one for commercial use; more than half of expenditure comes from the large-scale commercial side, which has been almost decimated creating an immediate shift for the sudden demand change.

Like vegetable and fruit farmers, dairy farmers have little choice but to dump excess milk. Dairy Farmers of America, estimates that farmers are dumping as many as 3.7 million gallons of milk each day. Due to the sudden demand change, milk processors do not have the equipment to package excess milk into smaller containers for grocery stores and retail use.

Donating surplus to food banks

Many farmers say they have donated part of the surplus to food banks and other programs, which have been overwhelmed with demand. But there is only so much perishable food that charities with limited numbers of refrigerators and volunteers can absorb.

The objective of my PADLET project is to investigate the disruption the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the food supply chain.
First, I will look at the impact the pandemic had due to the closing of restaurants, hotels and schools. Then, I will look at the long terms effects the pandemic created in the food supply and what farmers are having to do.
