Ruth is a person that I would describe as stern. A scene that represents Ruth as stern is on page 28 "RUTH Come on now, boy, it’s seven thirty! (Her son sits up

at last, in a stupor of sleepiness) I say hurry up, Travis!

You ain’t the only person in the world got to use a

bathroom!" (Hansberry 28) Normally, people most likely get woken up with a "Good morning" or a gentle "Wake up". But not Ruth! She is stern and does not want anyone to be late.

I think my character, Ruth, sees herself as someone who is just trying to help her family out. For example, Ruth stated in the text "You get your mind off money and eat your breakfast." (Hansberry 31) Ruth just wants the best for her family and wants them to have the right things on their mind.

I think other characters view my character as mean. For example, I think Walter, Ruth's husband views her as mean based on what I read "Something the matter with you this morning?" (Hansberry 29) He doesn't like how she's acting.

Conflict Resolution Style

After taking the conflict style quiz, as my character that I chose. My results for Ruth were a lion. A lion is described as "You know when you are right and you do not back down. Conflicts are not personal, they about the issues. You know what is important to you and you are not interested in conceding. Sometimes, people might be intimidated to bring new ideas to you even if they might be good solutions. You may also negatively impacts relationships when in conflict." An example from the play that shows Ruth as a lion would be "I don’t care what teacher say. I ain’t got it. Eat your

breakfast, Travis." (Hansberry 32) In this scene, Travis asked his Mom for 50 cents because his teacher said he needed it for a school event. Ruth knows she doesn't have the money at the moment and cannot give it to him.

I chose this picture to relate to my character that I chose, Ruth. In this picture, I can see this Mom is yelling at her daughter. I'm sure she isn't yelling at her daughter for no reason, but she is yelling at her because she wants what is best for her and wants to lead her in the right direction. As I read A raisin in the sun, I can see that Ruth just wants what is best for Travis and wants a good life for him, that's why she is always stern with him.

I think the song "Million Reasons" by Lady Gaga relates to Ruth the most because of this once specific part in the song "I bow down to pray I try to make the worst seem better" Ruth just wants what is best for her and her family and is very supportive. She tries to see the best in things.

A theme I would pick for the book A Raisin In The Sun would be pursuing dreams. The message they are trying to get across is anything is possible, and to never give up. A quote that supports this theme is from Walter "Money is life. Once upon a time freedom used to be life now its money. I guess the world really do change." Each character in the book has their own goals and they work every day at their goals to make them real.
