Muscles and blood during vigorous exercise cause an oxygen debt. This is because lactic acid is built up in our tissues. This causes the burning and sore sensations in your muscles after anaerobic respiration. To get rid of the lactic acid, your body needs to react it with oxygen. The more lactic acid that is built up, the more oxygen is needed to react with it. This is called oxygen debt.

Anaerobic respiration releases much less energy per glucose molecule than aerobic respiration. This is because the glucose is not completely broken down since oxygen is not used (oxidation is incomplete) therefore less energy is produced.

It is defined as a chemical reaction in cells that break down nutrient molecules to release energy. It does this by oxidizing the glucose to break it down into energy. The products of this reaction are carbon dioxide and water. Aerobic respiration produces more energy per glucose molecule as the glucose is broken down using oxygen (oxidation).
