Please look at the separate workshop leader's guidance for suggested timings for delivery and also, some suggestions for adjustments if you are short of time.

If you wish to share the slides after the session with the young people - that is OK, but please convert them to pdf before you share them, to avoid sharing the workshop leader's notes.

Summary: key vaping public health messages for young people

Vapes should not be used by children and young people, and are not recommended for anyone who does not smoke.
Vaping is less harmful than smoking, but it is not harmless.
Vapes haven’t been around long enough to know what all the long term effects might be.
Vapes containing nicotine are addictive. Once you start, it can be hard to stop.
Vapes are expensive - the cost soon adds up.
It is illegal to sell vapes containing nicotine to under 18s, or for adults to buy them to give to under 18s.
Most children and young people in the UK don’t smoke or vape.
If you don’t smoke, why would you start to vape?

The service is open to any Notts smoker aged 12+ who wants to stop smoking.

Reporting underage sales of vapes

If any young people disclose information about shops which are selling vapes to people under 18, you can report this using the route identified in this pdf poster. All reports are passed on to local Trading Standards teams, who will follow up with shops, without identifying where the report came from. Reporting underage sales helps to reduce young people's access to the products as well as further de-normalising sales to under 18s.

This leaflet explains what is covered in the INTENT programme for schools. This teaching programme aims to prevent smoking and vaping in young people. We've added it here for context as young people may mention it as part of their experience / existing knowledge related to smoking & vaping.

Referring young people 12+ who want to stop vaping to support services

The Notts Youth Service has been commissioned to provide a pilot stop vaping service for children aged 12-18 in selected secondary schools. This pilot will run until March 2027 and will test different approaches to stop vaping support in a limited number of secondary schools. To find out more, please contact youthservicestopvaping@nottscc.gov.uk

If your young people are not able to access the pilot service, unless young people are using substances with vapes, the best place to signpost young people who want to stop vaping is to the Childline website (linked above), which has tips for young people who want to give up.

Oral Nicotine Pouches - information

We're adding this new document, prepared locally for teachers, as Oral Nicotine Pouches (ONPs) are an emerging product and young people may ask about it during discussions on vaping. They may sometimes inaccurately refer to these products as "snus" but as you'll see from the document, snus is actually a tobacco product, banned in the UK, which is different to ONPs.

NCSCT Training in talking to young people about vaping

On the page linked above, you can find a link to download materials for a short (1–2 hours) training session aimed at staff who already work with young people (e.g. school nurses, teachers, youth workers, staff in children’s services).

The course will enable participants to have constructive conversations about stopping vaping and to offer support to young people who want to stop vaping.
