The setting of The Crucible effects Hale's characterization from the beliefs of the time. The time period was full of mysterious suspicions and to deny your belief in these things was death. Hale begins with having strong faith, listing off "your incubi and succubi; your witches that go by land air and sea (Miller, 185.)" and the emotional setting start to break down what he trusts over the course of the play.

In Act One Miller writes that Hale's "goal is light, goodness and its preservation"(Miller, 184) meaning that Reverend Hale stand for good and what is right in this play. He is a symbol of justice. Hale is also described as a "sensible man"(185) that will make the right choices. We can also see that Hale has his beliefs in the individuals when he tries to get them to "confess their crimes and save their lives."(Miller, 231)

Reverend Hale is a very honest, selfless, and truth seeking man. His behavior and mannerisms reflect this strongly. He approaches his tasks with a "tasty love of intellectual pursuit," (Miller, 185). However, throughout the play, he acquires more humility and becomes less sure of himself and his ability to see the truth,. "He is different now-drawn a little, and there is a quality of deference, even of guilt, about his manner now," (Miller, 197).

Naming of Characters

Reverend Hale is a very confident person, and thinks quite highly of himself. It can be inferred that this is reflected in the name given to him by Arthur Miller. A homophone of Hale is hail, which can be used to mean "to acclaim; approve enthusiastically". Hale's character believes himself to be superior to the other villagers, and "feels himself allied with the best minds of Europe-kings, philosophers, scientists, and ecclesiasts of all churches." (Miller, 184). He thinks that everyone who comes to him for support or help should surely, "abide by your [Hale's] judgement." (Miller, 185), for he is confident that he is always right. Therefore, his name alone invokes the ideas that the reader will later fully understand about his character.
