where does salsa come from: Salsa represents a mix of Latin musical genres, but its primary component is Cuban dance music. The roots of salsa originated in Eastern Cuba (Santiago de Cuba, Guantanamo) from the Cuban Son (about 1920) and Afro-Cuban dance

There has been considerable debate as to where Salsa was born, and how the evolution of salsa took place. Some schools of thought say that Salsa music has evolved from the Rumba. Rumba was first developed and brought to Cuba by the African Slaves during Colonial Times. This poetic expression of dance which was created by the blacks, was later absorbed by all Cubans. The Rumba was played on a variety of drums, tabletops, chairs and wooden boxes, spoons, jars or any object that could produce a musical note. This particular style of singing and drumming that was characteristic of the Rumba, influenced Cuban music and its most popular derivative called the Salsa. According to some tropical music experts, Salsa may refer to the various musical styles in Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the entire Spanish Caribbean. However Salsa has also been referred to as a dance and song style indigenous to Puerto Rico, from where it has been extensively evolved since the last twenty years.

Salsa emerged as a result of social, economic factors in Puerto Rico and the displacement of over one million Puerto Ricans to New York City during the early eighties.

This popular dance music is a mixture of Caribbean folk traditions, genres and sounds. The most significant feature of the Salsa is it’s transcultural usage of songs, instruments and dances from various Caribbean groups that had migrated to the USA.

Salsa has been a symbol of resistance to loss of national identity through migration, and has always been one of the ways to come back to cultural traditions. When groups of people gather to listen, sing and dance the Salsa, it brings about a celebration of values, beliefs and practices of its cultural heritage. Similarly when new Salsa music bands and dance groups invade television, it is a staunch expression of cultural identity that does not want to be lost within the Anglo Saxon orbit.
