Following the defeat of the Boers in the Anglo-Boer or South African War (1899–1902), the Union of South Africa was created as a self-governing dominion of the British Empire on 31 May 1910 in terms of the South Africa Act 1909, which amalgamated the four previously separate British colonies: Cape Colony, Colony of Natal, Transvaal Colony, and Orange River Colony. The country became a fully sovereign nation state within the British Empire, in 1934 following enactment of the Status of the Union Act. The monarchy came to an end on 31 May 1961, replaced by a republic as the consequence of a 1960 referendum, which legitimised the country becoming the Republic of South Africa.

South Africa stands out for its ethnic and cultural diversity. Therefore, there is no single South African culture.

South Africans with Indian roots preserve their cultural identity, languages and religious beliefs, being Christian, Hindu or Sunni Muslim and mastering English, although less frequently they speak Indian languages such as Hindi, Telugu, Tamil or Gujarati as their second language. A significant majority of black South Africans are impoverished residents of rural areas.

However, it is in these nuclei that cultural traditions survive with greater intensity; As blacks have become urbanized and westernized (South Africa is the most westernized country in Africa), certain aspects of traditional culture have been lost. Urban blacks generally speak English or Afrikaans in addition to their native language. There are small groups, although relevant, of people who speak Khoisan languages that are not included in the group of eleven official languages, but are one of the other eight languages that are nevertheless also officially recognized. There are small groups that speak threatened languages, most of which are from the Khoi-San family, who have no official status; however, some groups in South Africa are trying to promote and revive their use.
