Experimenters faked a collapse on the New York Subway and recorded the time and number of people to help in four different conditions, Race, Responsibility of the victim, presence of model helper and the number of passengers.

79% of victims received help, with an increased help of ill people and a tendency to be more likely to help if it was there own race. The number of bystanders made very little difference.

Provided people are in a closed environment where they cannot easily leave they will normally help. Helping is most likely when the victim is seen as not responsible for the situation and the race is the same as the helper.

They concluded that pluralistic ignorance had taken place. Difficult to generalise results as the conditions  were very specific, people trapped in the carriage and a certain type of person travelling at that time of day. It may also suffer from order effects as was always on the same part of the line at the same time of day.

The study was said to be unethical as the participants were not debriefed at the end of the study, the situation could have caused harm and distress and it is not known what the long term effects are.
