Making your own videos

In this task my course colleagues shared their opinions about making their own videos for teaching purposes

* Have you ever tried producing your own video?

YES, Beata, Nick and Maryam but only Beata for teaching purposes.

* Advantages:

Fun, motivating, can be accessed any time, good for building rapport, raises students´ awareness of their mistakes, out of class routine and students can practise their pron.
* Purpose

Teaching, feedback, warmer, ice breaker, underlining or highlighting mistakes

* Concerns:

Time factor, file size, sharing options, editing, integrating this into lesson aims, limited internet access and shy students

* Advice

Be yourself, do proofreading before recording, don’t worry about pausing or your voice,  provide a model and with younger learners highlight that the task is not an excuse to fool around.

Maria: Using webcams with students

Advantages

• Little tech knowledge: simple

• provides students ownership

• easy recording from mobile devices

• peer correction

• guidance for students with tips

• students can engage in different roles (director, etc.)

• collaborative stories can have a positive impact

• a varied number of activities can be carried out with these devices

Challenges

• correction can be time consuming

• netiquette issues could come up

• self-conscious students might be more reluctant to participate

• pairing students can be problematic if one of them does not do their work

• doubts regarding what is the best way to assess this work

• video formats can be incompatible in different areas
