It’s a matter of life and death. It’s a matter of lopsided access to healthcare, of children denied equal educations and therefore unable to claim secure economic futures."

This paragraph invites sympathy into people's hearts. Words such as "nostalgic", "lopsided" paired with "healthcare", "children" followed by "denied equal", & consequently connected to "unable to claim secure economic futures." This simply highlights the some general struggles & the consequences that take place after, & that makes the audience feel more compassionate.

this implies claim of value because it demonstrates both good and bad by placing "its great news" and "not a summer job" together which creates a connection to the message which is that the fight for equal rights is something that doesn't happen overnight it a issue that we have to solve over a period of time in order to full address the issue in order to get a solution that is acceptable to all victims that is it involves. this part of the text appeals to ethos where he stated "those of us who have been at this for a long time know that the fight for equal rights is a lifelong commitment" this helps to demonstrates the author expertise on the topic or issue he uses pronouns such as those of us which help to connect to those which help to connect to those who are in the fight and how they have experience this kind of event before so they know what the outcome will look like if they don't take time to solve the issue.

group members
Annastacia Fearon
Andrea Orellana Vega

Celebrities and politicians are making public statements in support of Black Lives Matter and other progressive organizations. Sports organizations are offering apologies for past acts of exclusion."

This is ethos because it takes on an authoritative tone in the beginning. The speaker does this by stating "You can't" as an opener, followed by "without", delivering the message that change can happen when there is "hope & faith in the general goodness of people." The speaker then lists multiple occasions where the "goodness" has been shown by the people, showing other's credibility.

"The moral universe doesn’t bend toward justice unless pressure is applied. In my seventh decade of hope, I am once again optimistic that we may be able to collectively apply that pressure, not just to fulfill the revolutionary promises of the U.S. Constitution, but because we want to live and thrive."

This is a claim of value because Kareem states that he is "optimistic" that the wheel of change can get to rolling, not only to "fulfill the revolutionary promises of the U.S. Constitution" - in other words, carrying through to what was constitutionally promised - but because people fighting against oppression simply want to "live & thrive". It's a claim of value because he is comparing constitutional statements that are supposed to be protected (insinuating that the constitutional promises had not been kept, & is actually causing disparity instead) to living & thriving, which is universal for anybody who is oppressed.
