Using his Literature Ortiz used his short stories to symbolize the injustice Native Americans have faced in the past and will face if nothing is changed. Ortiz has and will continue to advocate for his people. He has created a new wave of supporters and has really opened the eyes of the people. "I will tell my son over and over again, do not let the rivers burn" In this short story called "Burning River" explains the importance of natural areas to Native Americans. This helped spread awareness on taking care of Nature.

Ortiz, Simon J. 1941- (Simon Ortiz, Simon Joseph Ortiz)

From working in the military to becoming a professor at Arizona State University. Ortiz worked his way up in the social ladder year by year. As time went on he started to pick up writing and started to write poems and short stories. These short stories had such an impact on readers that identified themselves as a minority. Ortiz’s literature spread like wildfire and helped spread awareness on discrimination against Native Americans and their injustices. This supports my thesis that Simon did not believe in the American Dream. In the short story "New Story" Simon uses white arrogance as a way to teach a lesson. There was a lack of Indians."

36"Yes," I said.". The story describes a float that would dress white people into Native Americans and paint their faces. This short story spread across the country and taught ignorant White Americans in respecting Native American culture.

37"This year, we wanted to do it right.

38We have looked hard and high

39for Indians but there didn't seem

40to be any in this part of Colorado."

Ortiz saw this and knew he had to make a change. Ortiz created and put Native American literature on the map. Ortiz inspired hundreds of other writers and allowed them to create their own stories. These new writers created their own stories that helped bring support to Native Americans.
