We are expected to think about the end when we plan. At the end of the day, we want our students to understand what they are reading. We can get there with explicit vocabulary instruction.

We need to truly understand what we are teaching and why before we dive into it. Otherwise, we are as lost as the students. Today we did that with tier two vocabulary.

Teaching tier 2 vocabulary connects to backward planning because we are learning the words first, drilling them before they come up. This way, when they do show up, students are ready. This is in the spirit of background planning because we are learning these tier two words now knowing that we are going to be using them later, ergo backwards planning

Building student’s vocabulary comprehension repertoire is essential for planning with end goal in mind. It is very simple, if students don’t understand certain vocabulary words within a text, or question their thinking process will be limited due to that comprehension gap. If this is addressed early on, the students comprehend in any subject should improve greatly.

How to incorporate tier 2. Words into students learning to build their vocabulary. Using their 2 words would help students understand their work or a question a lot more if they knew how to break down what they are reading

We are viewing the goals and incorporating them into the lessons - placing an emphasis on vocabulary building.

It's helpful in that we are using vocabulary in lessons to increase familiarity and taking time to break words down or demonstrate how to break words down as needed.
