Soft Scales and Hard Skins 一觸即發 is a BCNC youth-written play. Over the past six weeks, our students have grown tremendously — starting from scratch, exploring diverse theater techniques, and deepening their understanding of themselves and the world. Using the stage as a platform, they raise awareness of important issues and inspire change.

This special performance is more than just a play — it’s a celebration of community, cultural representation, drama, and the power of youth voices.

About Me: My name is Gabby Ger or 葛光瑾 (she/her). I am a clinical intern at BCNC and a master’s student at Lesley University in the music therapy and mental health counseling program. I am a second-generation immigrant and Taiwanese American woman who grew up in the US, and while English is my first language I also speak Mandarin and some Spanish. I enjoy cooking and baking, playing card games, making origami, and making music in my free time. I’m here to be a support for anyone who needs it or if you’d just like to chat!

Eligibility

Be a dependent student who is a permanent legal resident of Massachusetts and whose source of support is a parent who has been a permanent resident of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for the 12 months prior to the opening of the academic year; or an independent student who has been a permanent resident of the Commonwealth for the 12 months immediately preceding the opening of the academic year.

Be a U.S. Citizen or non-citizen eligible under Title IV regulations.

Be in compliance with Selective Service Registration.

Not be in default of any federal or state Student Loans for attendance at any institution or owe a refund for any previous financial aid received.

Be enrolled full time (at least 12 credits or its equivalent) at an eligible institution.

Not have earned a bachelor's or professional degree or their equivalent.

Not have earned a first diploma from a hospital or professional nursing program.

Be maintaining satisfactory academic progress in accordance with institutional and federal standards.

Demonstrate financial aid need as determined by program guidelines.

Amount

Massachusetts Gilbert Grant awards range from $200 to $2500 per academic year.

YLP is a leadership development program for Asian American girls currently in their sophomore or junior year of high school. The program supports participants’ growth as rising leaders in their social, academic, and future professional communities by focusing on building identity, encouraging self-confidence, and developing leadership skills. To give you more information about our programming, I've included our syllabus and a packet with further details for interested students. Also included a slide deck if that format is easier to share. Please share it with your network and anyone who might be interested or know someone who would be interested. 

We want to build a cohort that brings together a range of Asian/Asian-American, academic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. We especially encourage students of low-income and immigrant backgrounds to apply, and we welcome transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming applicants.
