In the pictures the last one is showing a lot of baggage that the reader is carrying to read the book (struggles of reading and comprehension) and looking at the book through a small lens. The lens being very small-minded and not seeing the bigger picture. In the text , it mentions it as a continuum from an efferent stance to an aesthetic stance. Reading and Writing are reciprocated and are done in my classroom using SWIRL and now the new Socratic Method. Students in the Socratic method are reading an article for the gist first. They will reread and use a highlighter for highlighting a stance to a question they are probed with.The third time they are looking for counter stances to the question given the 2nd time reading. Usually they will debate and  them be prompted to do some sort of writing following the debate. The reader will take the text and elaborate much more than what the text gives. 

My students do expand on the text. The questions that they sometimes ask why reading are questions that I haven't thought of myself. 

Students come with a lot on their minds (background knowledge and experiences) and they're trying to connect to the text. Maybe the'ye finding it difficult to connect with what they're reading.

However, this meaning can be affected by the "baggage" or personal experiences that the reader may be going through which are represented by the "lens" the reader is looking through in the picture.

The third pictures seems to convey that each reader comes with nuanced and specifically cultured comprehension skills, which may define the lens of the reader.
