Hitler’s emerged as chancellor on January 30, 1933. It was a crucial turning point not just for Germany but also for the world. His plan, supported by much of the German population, was to do away with politics and make Germany a powerful, unified, one-party state. He began by ordering a rapid expansion of the state police, and the Gestapo, and putting Hermann Goering in charge of a new security force. From that moment on, Nazi Germany was running, and nobody at the time could do anything about it.

In the following years, the Chiang Kai-Shek-led Nationalist government of China capitulated to Japanese military and diplomatic demands. Instead, it engaged in an internal conflict with Mao Zedong's Chinese Communists, who were centered in the north-central Chinese province of Shensi. Meanwhile, the Japanese started to bolster their military presence in North China, which prompted the Nationalists and the Communists to unite in resistance. After the Marco Polo Bridge incident on July 7, 1937, when Chinese and Japanese forces exchanged gunfire on the outskirts of Perking, overt hostilities between Japan and China started.

He also knew a dirty little secret: millions of lire had been set aside to pay Greek politicians and generals into not resisting the Italian invasion. It is unclear whether the money ever made it past the Italian fascist agents in charge; if it did, it clearly made no difference—the Greeks succeeded in driving the Italian invaders back into Albania after only one week, and the Axis power spent the next three months fighting for its life in a defensive battle. To make matters worse, a British carrier-based strike had disabled nearly half of the Italian navy at Taranto, leaving Mussolini humiliated.

Five naval assault divisions were deployed to the beaches of Normandy, France, as part of the operation known as OVERLORD.

The Thirty-sixth was a proud member of the "Texas army," flying the Lone Star flag and donning the fabled T-patch on their shoulders. The Ninetieth Division, which originally included members of the national guard and draftees from Texas and Oklahoma, was also heavily involved in combat in Europe. The division was organized at Camp Barkeley not far from Abilene in March 1942, and on D-day, 1944, it landed on Utah beach. The Ninetieth took part in Operation Cobra, the Allied breakout in northern Europe, as a unit of Gen. George Patton's Third Army. The Ninetieth fought in intense combat at Metz and in the Saar, pushed across France in the summer of 1944, and helped relieve the trapped American soldiers in the Ardennes.
