Today I learnt a lot about the history of slavery in Guadeloupe. The most memorable facts were that even though slavery was officially abolished in 1848, the last slave ship to arrive on Guadeloupe was in 1852 and that France has still not included its overseas territories in the treaty protecting human rights. Another interesting fact was that Guadeloupe has belonged to British Empire for a period of time during the Seven Years' War (1756-1763) and in 1794, and at the beginning of the 19th century and that slavery was abolished for 8 years and reestablished in 1802. In short, I learnt a lot about history today and saw the places where slaves were sold.

I was very impressed by the music today and the story behind it. That people can somehow maintain their culture even under the most adverse conditions (at least a little). I was also very impressed by the drumming, as it was performed with so much passion. The dance of instinct, the dance of life - that became really clear. And I think it is right and important that it is honored by the UNESCO cultural heritage.
