The characters in the story are Luci and Emily. They are two girls that live by the coast which is also inhabited by blue penguins. Blue penguins search for good hiding places like burrows, under vegetation, between rocks, crevices and caves. These homes are called nests. Because we are building more houses and roads we have taken over the penguins territory. This means blue penguins are making their way up to houses.

Tims job is to look after the species and habitat of blue penguins. Luci, Emily and Tim have made nesting boxes for the penguins to provide them safety from the cats and dogs. They are planning on putting the nesting boxes in Emily and Luci's back yard.

Emily and Luci have become aware of the dangers that face these penguins. The dangers include cats, dogs and being run over by cars and other vehicles. Most people dont like the penguins nesting at the shed or somewhere at their house because a blue penguins nest smells and they make a lot of noise. So the girls have called Tim a man from the department of conservation to take care of the penguins.

Emily luci and their friends made the nesting boxes out of wood and nailed them together, it took them an hour. The design of the boxes were based on the Omaru nesting boxes. The boxes were put under the flax and next to the bush track.
