Ratliff in chapter 10 of his book "Every Song Ever" makes a point of understanding the musical artist. Ratliff claims that to fully understand the artist the listener should be well acquainted with not only every piece of music the artist has written but everything they've ever done. He begins the chapter with the example of Mariah Carey and her life as a musical artist. Ratliff's brief synopsis of Carey's life is used to describe how a lot of people fixate on one artist and collect their work in an attempt to try and understand the artist, this is what he describes as endless inventory. Though the example of Carey was brief its used to transition to more examples like with his friend and Mozart or his cousin and Frank Zappa; which not only would've included The Grateful Dead but Zappa's solo work as well. Ratliff goes into more detail with the story of his cousin and The Grateful Dead than he did with Mozart or Mariah Carey.
