The Truman Doctrine - 1947

The purpose of the Truman Doctrine was to prevent communism worldwide by explicitly stopping the Soviet Union from expanding. Truman established that the US would provide political, military, and economic assistance to all democratic nations who are under threat for authoritarian forces. This event connects to the theme of the US becoming a rising power because of its involvement in foreign wars and the Cold War. The Truman Doctrine became one of the fundamental parts of the US Cold War Policy.

The Marshall Plan - 1948

The Marshall Plan which was also established by Harry Truman and George Marshall, became another implementation for the Cold War. Also known as the Economic Recovery Act of 1948, this plan was created to aid capital and materials that helped Europe rebuild its economy. The US was in full support of Western Europe reforming their democratic governments. How this event fits in with the theme would be like the previous event that also developed one of the most notorious foreign affairs and technological advancements in our country.

The Kent State Massacre - 1970

On May 4, 1970, the Ohio National Guard sent troops to Kent State University in order to calm down the Vietnam War Protesters. The troops shot into the crowd, killing four unarmed students and injuring another nine. Richard Nixon was the president at the time who allowed the troops to enter the campus in hopes of disposing of the crowd of protesters. At the time, anti-war protests were growing and the government did all possible to get rid of these movements. This event connects to the theme because of how the US was impacted by this form of domestic terrorism and the abuse of power. Although many times terrorism is seemed as something that occurs in other countries or when other countries impact our own but this mass shooting defied the odds of a massacre occurring on US soil.

George H.W. Bush and the end of the Cold War - 1991

In 1991, Mikhail Gorbachev and George H.W. Bush declared the end of the Cold War. The former Soviet Union president consented the reunification of Western and Eastern Germany and led the 15 states into freedom. After years of dictatorship and violence, the Soviet Union collapsed and communism was held to an extent but in another continent, problems were beginning to emerge. Bush declared a New World Order hoping to restore those countries impacted negatively by the Soviet Union's damage. His promise didn't last long with the economy becoming damaged and decreasing, Americans losing their jobs, and much more. This event connects to the theme because of the US involvement in the beginning of the Cold War and the end of the Cold War

September 11 - 2001

On September 11, 2001, nearly 3000 people were killed and another 6000 were injured by terrorists who crashed commercial airplanes into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania. One of the worst attacks on American soil, this attack was created by an Islamist terrorists group named Al-Qaeda, led by Osama Bin Laden. These atrocious and devastating attacks truly impacted the War on Terrorism and how the US regulates airborne transportation. George W. Bush, the president at the time, addressed to Congress the creation of the Office of Homeland Security. How this event connects to the theme is because the war on terrorism was never fully acknowledged until the 9/11 attacks. Security and other aspects were enforced and these measures have been improved over time thankfully to technology and other things.
