Violence is seen as 'bravery' in the beginning of the play

Scotland has a history of having had the most fearsome of warriors it is not surprising that violence plays such a role in Shakespeare's Macbeth. In the beginning of the play there is an awe attached to the one who displays prowess on the battlefield, for example an army captain states to King Duncan, "For brave Macbeth--well he deserves that name-- Disdaining fortune, with his brandished steel, Which smoked with bloody execution, Like valors' minion carved out his passage..." Macbeth is being discussed as being brave and loyal for showing such immense amount of violence on the battlefield; indeed, his ability to 'carve' his way through humans is described as being a display of valour. The more brutal the act that more courage Macbeth must have shown, it can be argued that it was Macbeth's brutal act of "...unseamed him from the nave to th' chops, and fixed his head upon our battlements" that gained him the title of Thane of Cawdor.

Macbeth killed king Duncan because he wanted the king's position. Violence is shown because Macbeth wants the role of king, so he had to kill king Duncan to get the position. There was a lot of violence after the killing as people were suspicious, so people started to get violent when trying to find out who killed king Duncan. This ended in killing Macbeth because he lost some friends, just because he wanted to be king. By getting what Macbeth wanted means he lost a lot of things.

Violence will always lead to another act of violence.

Any act of violence will always bring more violence. This is exemplified through every act of violence in Macbeth. Lady Macbeth devises the idea to kill King Duncan so that Macbeth can be KING. Once Macbeth had killed macbeth he got the the feeling that he needed to do more once he had become king so he could protect his throne being taken over by someone else. macbeth new that the witches had told Banquo that his sons could be king and that is why Macbeth went onto his next act of violence... killing Banquo. Violence is a very evil thing and to lead to all sorts of destruction and death. In this play violence lead to macbeth Killing his best friend and trying to murder his son and then eventually to Macbeth going crazy and of course his death in the end.
