Readers, Writers, Texts
1. Why and how do we study literature? Why do we study TTTC?

We study literature by rereading and analyzing each portion of the passage, studying the sentence structures and words to see the authorial choices that the writer makes. We study TTTC to see how O'Brien presents his message and purpose about the war, his experiences as a soldier, and how he presents his opinion on global issues from society.

2. How are we affected by literary texts in various ways? How are we impacted by TTTC?
We are affected by literary texts in various ways by the emotion that is portrayed by the author, their tone directly affects the audience's attitude toward the topic. We are impacted by TTTC by feeling the varying emotion that O'Brien felt in the war, like grief, anger, curiosity, and love. We form new ideas about the world around us after learning from O'Brien's stories.

3. How does the structure and style of TTTC affect its meaning?
The structure and style of TTTC affects its meaning as the varying tones talk about different truths, and paradoxes that reveal new perspectives. The values he contrasts reveal the ambiguity in war, and how different characters represent figures and aspects from society, and change the way we react to those ideas.

And connects to Persepolis while showing the impact of war and its trauma. With Days and Memory it portrays the shame of bearing national guilt for living in a twisted society.

How does TTTC connect to our world today?
In our world today, there are still wars the make no sense and have destructive impacts on individuals who are left with PTSD, and the Vietnam War is an important part of our history that must be recognized in our modern day. However, society outside of Harlem was still divided, Hughes showed the social discrimination that occurred in his life, and how the facilities are still segregated. He addressed how the past of slavery still affected them and their values.

How does art reflect the community from which it comes?
Art reflects the community's social collaboration and the way they celebrate their shared values.

Linda Krumholz claims (in "The Ghosts of Slavery: Historical Recovery in Toni Morrison’s Beloved") that finding a voice for the thoughts and experiences of women is central to the "healing," historical recovery theme and structure of the book. According to Krumholz, Morrison’s novel "adapts techniques from modernist novels, such as the fragmentation of the plot and shifting narrative voice, to compel the reader to actively construct an interpretive framework" (109). How does the novel specifically address issues of gender, writing and power? How does the structure and style of the novel give voice to "the thoughts of the women of 124, unspeakable thoughts, unspoken" (Beloved 199)?

The novel addresses the issues of gender by revealing the standards of etiquette, behavior, and attitude that the women of 124 have both adapted to within their lives but also drawn away from, in their individualistic routines and their tight relationship with one another. The special bonds they share give light to the importance of motherhood, a theme addressed constantly with all the girls needs to protect each other and also take up all the attention. By focusing on those who had been 'exiled' of a sorts from the community, the reasons why a community affected by internalized racism show how slavery had impacted the identity of the community as well as the women.

Consider what we've learned about with machismo, marianismo, honor and the impact of colonialism.
Within the book, the microcosm community represents a lot of qualities that Columbian culture has, especially concerning gender roles. The characters portray the effect that machismo and marianismo standards have on the people, where men are expected to keep a facade of strength and an unfaltering masculinity. Women are seen as pure and innocent figures that must maintain a calm and compliant posture. Along with this, women were expected to keep their virginity until marriage, being raised for an honorable position. Honor is objectified heavily that those who break these standards are considered to not belong, worthy of exile and even death.

Intertextuality
How valid is the notion of a "classic" literary text? What makes Persepolis "literary" even though it is a graphic novel?
A "classic" literary text can actually expand to cover a variety of different formats, styles, and structures for writing, therefore it should reach farther than just a pure literary text. Persepolis has a great amount of text in its captions and dialogue, as well as its rich use of authorial choices in the graphics provided by Satrapi. The text still has many literary elements in both verbal and image form.

Time and Space
What insight did Persepolis give you into Iranian life during and after the revolution?
Persepolis provided a much broader range of perspectives from Iranian lives, and helped us understand more about the culture.

How does Persepolis connect to other works we've read? Be detailed in how it connects with global issues and thematic and stylistic ideas to other works.
It connects to TTTC through their portrayal of war and its impact on both civilians and soldiers. With Chronicle, they both show the oppressive nature of gender standards on women who must appear modest and on men who must appear strong, due to religious beliefs. It connects Beloved with its show of the importance of family in harsh circumstances, and the impact of trauma on relationships.

How does Persepolis connect to our world today?
It connects to our world today by allowing the audience to learn more about a nation who had many assumptions surrounding it, as Satrapi aimed to inform her readers of Iranian society beyond the war and Islamic revolution, in the way it affected her family and herself. Her identity as a foreigner and the discrimination she faced is still a reality to people in our day, and we must work to welcome changes in a population, not exclude it.
