Sightseeing is enjoyable because it’s the only time I can relax. My apartment is filled with grueling chores, work is filled with worries. Abandoning all of that - even for a moment - is a privilege I’m lucky to have. That’s why now, I’m biking down the sidewalk in a dusty old town slowly with my camera sitting in the basket, and my necklace dangling from my neck. Buildings line the side with long, dark alleys stretching out. I close my eyes for a brief moment, relishing the lukewarm wind and the freedom I have. Up ahead, a rusty bike rack invites me over, and the next thing I know, my camera whirrs to life, and excitement rejuvenates my body more than ever. Pictures of a quaint house, pictures of a particularly fancy mailbox, pictures of the sunset. As I click the button to take another photo, I notice that the sun is rapidly setting. Putting away my camera, I walk to the bike rack as I pull out my phone. Checking the map, I find a well-kept hotel named “The Bell and Dragon”. I can’t find another nearby place, so I ride my bike the quarter-mile to the building.

The bell rings, and like clockwork, the class puts away their supplies, and the teacher dismisses them. I’m the last one out, like always. I try to rush my way through the crowd, and glide down the stairs. I slide to the planter as if on ice. I catch myself from falling over as I plop my backpack on the floor. A loud thud sounds on the right, and a student appears on the floor. I scrunch up my face to try to recognize them, but to no avail. I shake my head and continue my day. It doesn’t matter, mistakes happen.

The primary sources at the start of every chapter play a discreet role in introducing the plot. People treat slaves like items or property. On page 130, the text states, “...at the house of the late Mr. Waldron near the Exchange (lower end of Broad street) the following goods and merchandise...” The quote continues with an advertisement for selling slaves. Later in the story, Isabel finds out that Madam has sold Ruth. This shows that people believed that slaves were not people, but objects or property. Another piece of text evidence is on page 172. Storms can be real, descriptive, or metaphorical. The primary source reads, “The clouds grow very dark.” In the book, all three types of storms are present. The fog is blinding, the storm of soldiers running and fighting, and Isabel’s storm she has to fight. This source introduces the struggle of everything around Isabel. The primary sources in the book are an indication of what’s to come.

Dear President Theodore Roosevelt:

Hi, my name is Ren. The conditions in these camps have worsened over the past few days. The internment camps for Japanese Americans. I’m American. I don’t really know why I’m here. My dad says it’s because I’m Japanese. I’ve never been to Japan. I asked why Japanese people were being sent here. He told me that it was because we were spying on ourselves for the Japanese. How could I do that? I heard my parents arguing quietly about our rights when I went to bed. It was easy to hear because we were in the same room. Please get us out of here! I remember in school, they taught us about the Bill of Rights. The fourth amendment says that we can’t be taken from our homes without probable cause. How can you tell that we are committing treason? If you can’t get us out, then please improve the conditions. It’s freezing at night, and sweltering in the afternoon. The rice is never satisfactory, and the meal size isn’t large enough for some people. There’s a hole in the ceiling, and it always rains. The floor is rotting below the hole. There’s nothing to do. That’s why I’m writing this letter. At least the air is crisp in the evening. It’s never like that at home. I can never enjoy it here though. Please get us out of here.

Thank you for your time,

Ren

The human body is a complex topic that should be considered in technological advances. In dystopian literature, it is often portrayed as weak because of a lack of exercise, such as in works like "The Machine Stops" by E.M. Forster and "Wall-E". In the real world, upcoming VR and AR technology can simulate things that do not require much physical activity and give access to exercises such as climbing, running, or yoga, which can stimulate people's real-life counterparts. A society that puts more thought into many aspects of living will usually thrive more than one that does not. In a world dominated by technology, people can lose a sense of reality but gain new experiences that would otherwise not be possible.
