I often find myself starting my homework in the later hours of the night or going to bed without doing much. My grades are still good but I fear for myself next year and need to change if I'm going to succeed!

When it comes to studying or doing homework, I find that the rewards system works best. For example, if you're a food person, buy your favorite candy and reward yourself for each page you finish studying by eating a piece of candy. Or, if you're a TV person, study/do homework for 10-20 minutes and watch your favorite show for 5.

The most important thing (I've found) is getting into a routine. Having a schedule, even a loose one, helps. It helps you push to get things done due to the "pressing" time limit.

Just in case my hacks don't help, here are some other ones:

http://www.teen.com/2015/08/20/random-stuff/studying-homework-hacks-tips-tricks/

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwi07tb0-57QAhVK94MKHcdZAjcQFgglMAE&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.pinterest.com%2Fexplore%2Fhigh-school-hacks%2F&usg=AFQjCNGlU8ZYJUpaIr5xHdMYVZ8YYBd9YQ&bvm=bv.138169073,d.amc

I feel your pain here, sometimes I like to just get my work done and don't really think about how well I did it. Sometimes what I do is try to think, "okay let's make this teacher go wow with how amazingly stellar this assignment is" and then just kick butt. Also, it might help to take breaks in between subjects during homework time. That way you don't feel like you're wasting leisure time or that you rush through your work to have free time.

Joe, I feel like you already have good work ethics in your life. The only thing that you could possibly change is your procrastination. But I mean, everyone does it. If you can eliminate most of that habit, your work ethic should sky rocket.
You could get a lot out of this for your paper also.

This is a good change to make in your life, and I hope that you are able to succeed in it and keep it up past this assignment. I suggested to Jason on his Padlet that going to the closest public library can help you focus and get in the mood to work. It also provides a nice, quiet environment.
As far as research goes, though, I think you are hitting the nail on the head.

I think this is an interesting experiment. Considering that you have pretty good performance with your present system, I wonder what other benefits you might notice. Do you feel less stressed? Higher self-esteem? That being said, I think you need to decide on some criteria for success since "raising your grades" isn't reasonable. I also think you need to define how long you will work...homework and syudying is never really finished.
