Stephen Hawking was 21 when he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS. His first symptom was clumsiness. He was supposed to die in the next couple years, but lived at least 50 years longer than expected. His health deteriorated slowly. First He ended up in a wheelchair and then he had trouble writing. Soon, his speech was deteriorating and he got pneumonia. To help him breathe, He had a hole cut in his neck and a windpipe placed in the hole. He lost his ability to speak so he communicated through a computer system. It is believed that he survived for so long because he got the disease when he was younger. Others believe it is his biology that determines how long he lived. Professor Hawking believed the disease had many different causes and that his may have been due to poor vitamin intake. Despite Steven Hawking’s disability he still became a well-known author.

Image citation:
http://memecrunch.com/meme/BZ1LD/stephen-hawking-1942-2018/image.jpg
This is an image of the late Steven Hawking.
(Profile of Courage) Helen Keller - 6/27/1880-6/01/1968

Helen Keller was born a healthy child. At 19 months she became deaf and blind as a result of an unknown illness. On March 3, 1887 Anne Sullivan came to be her teacher. Anne brought a doll to Helen. She spelled "d-o-l-l" into Helen’s hand. Helen quickly learned to form the letters correctly and in the correct order, but did not know she was spelling a word, or even that words existed. She learned lots of words. Helen started to understand words and then the alphabet. Helen learned to speak but didn’t like her voice. She went on to become the first deaf blind person to get a Bachelor of Arts degree. She wrote an autobiography and was a frequent contributor to magazines and newspapers. Helen used a braille typewriter to prepare her manuscripts and then copied them on a regular typewriter.Helen worked for the American Foundation for the Blind for over 40 years. She became interested in blind people overseas. Wherever she traveled, she brought encouragement to millions of blind people. She survived a stroke in 1960. Helen was very successful throughout her life and never let her disability hold her back.

Image citation:
http://images.fineartamerica.com/images-medium-large/1-helen-keller-1880-1968-blind-and-dead-everett.jpg
This is an image of Helen Keller.

Ludwig van Beethoven was a musical composer. Surprisingly Beethoven was deaf. When he first started becoming deaf he did not want anyone to know. He only told trustworthy people who lived far away from him. When he was no longer able to hide it he talked to visitors by having them write what they had to say in notebooks, known as the “conversation books”. He answered by speaking so only one side of the conversation is documented. His deafness established itself slowly and unpredictably. It wasn’t until it became clear that Beethoven was deaf that he accepted it. The deafness was believed to be caused by intestinal issues, an inflamed ear, a lesion in the ear, or syphilis but we will never know for sure.
He tried many different things to get his hearing back but they didn’t work. Beethoven's talent never diminished despite his deafness and he went on to be one of the most well known musical composers.

Image citation:
https://www.google.com/search?q=beethoven&rlz=1C5CHFA_enUS773US773&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwil-NjxkdHgAhUIRKwKHSqgBYcQ_AUIDygC&biw=1291&bih=686#imgrc=7UV-ZU7wCcHVEM:
This is a portrait of Ludwig Van Beethoven.

He was born with congenital glaucoma that left him partially blind, something that did not prevent him from taking piano lessons until the age of six. However, at age 12 he suffered a blow during a football game that left him completely blind. Endowed with a spirit of innate improvement, he decided to focus entirely on music, specifically on singing. He also studied Law.
