Arachne was bragging about being the best weaver ever even better than Athena until Athena came herself she challenged arachne to a weaver battle and she drew a picture of the gods but she drew the gods disrespectfully and Athena drew them respectfully so Arachne lost and Athena won and Arachne's punishment was being turned into a spider

They are similar because they were both bragging a lot about things like being a good weaver and having a beautiful tail and they both got punishments like being turned into a spider or your tail being bald that is how the two stories are similar.

They are different because instead of being turned into a spider Possum's tail turned bald and also because Arachne is a Greek myth and Possum's tail is a native American myth/story.
