People can't see each other (because not all videos appear on screen) so it's hard to gauge when other people are trying to speak so we all jump in at the same time. Since Zoom picks up the loudest audio to make "speaker", some of us end up getting talked over every time and never really able to speak. I know it's super cumbersome and unnatural for a "free flow" type of conversation, but it would be helpful if TAs/profs generally asked us to use the raise hand feature and then maintain a speaker's list and called on people in order to unmute and speak. In a class today, the prof basically just told us to do the thing where we read body language and can tell who's about to talk.  Well, I'm neurodivergent and I can't just do that. I would vastly prefer a system by which we can get queued up. I know the "raise hand" feature doesn't tell the teaching staff who raised it first, so maybe if that's an issue, people could just type their names in chat to queue up? Some of our internet connections aren't strong enough for video especially if multiple people are zooming from the same home. Some of us have less than ideal living situations or live with others who don't want to be on video with a class of strangers.  Some of us are caring for our children as we attend class and realize  that having our children on video is as distracting for classmates as it is for us.]]> 2020-09-07 12:08:52 UTC https://padlet.com/philosonista/7845u72vzbsnfwtv/wish/724740871 Public chats while professor is giving lecture https://padlet.com/philosonista/7845u72vzbsnfwtv/wish/724766336 I have found it really distracting to have people sending chats to “everyone” while a professor is giving their lecture since the notification bubble pops up every time and then I feel like I need to read through the chats to make sure I am not missing something, and then I stop focusing on the lecture. I like how some professors will have designated stopping times for people to ask questions (over voice or in chat). Or have you “raise your hand” if you have an urgent question that cannot wait until they stop.
