After the British had evacuated the city of Boston, George Washington had predicted that they would make their way to New York. So they made their way to New York ahead of the British, in preparation they had constructed batteries on top of hills overlooking the town. Stirling, a colonial general was leading an attack on the British navy which had landed, but had to fall back due to being flanked from the left and behind. George Washington brought reinforcements to support Stirling’s forces, but they could not overcome the British so they had to retreat by crossing the Delaware river. Date of Battle( August 27-30 1776)

The Americans had done really well with their fortifications on the coast. They had also constructed batteries along the coast on hills with the high ground, giving them an advantage. But they had also joined a losing fight at the time. And the Americans had roughly ten thousand troops and were outnumbered two to one. Both sides were equipped with muskets and bayonets, and many carried rifled weapons. And only 400 British were killed and 2000 Americans killed or captured. This proves that they should have not taken them head on and should have finessed on them.
