From the very beginning of the story, Delia is shown to be working hard. The author also makes sure to explain how this hard work has affected her physically and mentally. She is the main breadwinner of her household, which is very unusual for the time. Sykes, her husband, immediately treats Delia in harsh ways which plays a large role in the way that Delia feels. All characteristics presented by Delia point to how strong she is as a woman. The first clue for the geography of the setting is the atmosphere of a small town where everybody knows one another and the presence of snakes in their hot town. The treatment of women in this story also make it known that the time in which the story is set is in the early 1900s. Delia works as someone who does laundry for white people as well as the domestic house chores she does.
