It was a cold night, Charlie couldn't stop rubbing his feet. He was wearing no shoes, just there standing on the freezing grass off the road. He tugged his hands inside his oversized T-shirt, hoping this would make him warmer. Fifteen minutes passed, and there was no sight of his mother, or his grandfather.

"Perhaps they were in the middle of something. Maybe they were just late. They COULD turn up any moment now," Charlie thought.

Light drizzle of rain started falling from the sky. Charlie had always liked rainy days because it would mean Mommy would stay indoors with him all day long. This time it felt really different, as he was all alone in the middle of nowhere. All he could do was to pray that someone he knew might appear from nowhere and take him home.

He was starting to regret it now.

-- by Miss Lee

Charlie stood aghast at his door, he simply stared at his unconscious mother laying on the ground. Not so long later he rushed to her side and started shaking her as he screamed "MOM!? WHAT HAPPENED!" he yelled as he called for his sister but no response from her. Charlie glanced at his mother's facial features to see if there's any sign of consciousness, he thought his mother looked odd. She had a beauty mark of her left cheek but it's now on her right cheek, and Charlie's mother is supposed to be at work right now, not at home laying on the ground unconscious.

Even though the suspicious scene creeped Charlie out , Charlie still decided to call the police, he looked for his phone, but while looking for his phone he could hear whimpers from the roof but ignored it, knowing that his 'mother' is in danger. He found his mother's phone and called the police but no response, which isn't what a police department would do. He panicked, as he tried to call the police again and again but still no response. "I'll just bring her back to life if the police won't answer!" Charlie said as he was running down the stairs but his 'mother' was gone with no trace of her.

-Ashley

As Charlie saw his mom and sister, Charlie’s sister ran to the nurse to tell her Charlie woke up. Then Charlie asked his mom feeling a bit drowsy “Ma? Where am I? Charlie’s mom said, “Charlie? Is it really you? You’ve been in a coma for 3 days already” Charlie realised he was in a hospital. He was starting to get his memory back.

He then remembered that he was running from someone or something that resembled his mom but 5 shades more pale…His heart racing, Charlie told his mom” Mom I-I-I saw a pale ver-version of you and Claire at the school shooting I swear I saw it but when I told the police man he saw nothing! I RAN as FAST as I could to the bus stop to escape but then the bus FLIPPED OVER ON ITS BACK! After that I saw the pale version of you and Claire Staring right at my soul. Thats all I could remember after I fainted.

His mom didn’t really believe Charlie about the pale people and thought he was just hallucinating because of how scared he was of the school shooter. She still asked Charlie if he could still remember anything about the paranormal stuff he saw then before the crash.

Charlie told his mom that when he saw that ghost instead of his moms beauty mark was on the wrong side of her face and that was about it.

As Charlie’s mom kissed Charlie on the cheek, Charlie’s sister ran to the room with a nurse to check on Charlie. The nurse told Charlie’s mom and sister to leave the room for just a little so she could check on Charlie. Charlie’s mom kissed Charlie and left.

After 15 minutes or so Charlie was free to go from the hospital. As he was leaving He saw a table full of local newspapers. He put one in his mothers bag and left.

As he left he saw his friend Philip walking by the pedestrian. He asked his mom if he could say hi to him and come back. After that, he went to the car park and they drove home. When they were back Charlie was feeling a little bored. He remembered that he took a newspaper from the hospital. He went to take the newspaper from his mother’s bag and ran back to his room to read it. The news paper read…”School bus found capsized at Padlet local school today. 13 have been taken to the hospital and survived unfortunately 3 people have been presumed dead. 1 person by the name Philip Astill was presumed missing.

Charlie could hardly believe his eyes after he saw the newspaper. So great was his relief as he skipped a joyful jig as he knew he saw his friend who was presumed missing. All he wanted to do was to go to school the next day and tell everyone that he found a missing person.

The next day, Charlie’s mother was looking down. ‘What is wrong?’ asked Charlie. ‘N-nothing! In fact, I do not want you or your sister to know why! You will know it within the next few years…’ replied Charlie’s mother as beads of sweat started to form on her forehead.

As Charlie and Claire were heading to school, something made their jaws drop. Charlie kept on rubbing his eyes, but the scene did not change. Everyone’s eyes were fixed at the scene. Even the little puppies and cats acted the same way. There was a sightseeing train flying out of its tracks and heading towards the sky. ‘What am I looking at?’ asked Charlie. ‘How do I know!’ replied Claire. ‘WE’RE LATE!!!’ shouted Charlie as he held onto Claire’s hand and ran to school like a cheetah.

As Charlie and Claire reached their school, Claire’s eyes rolled onto a sheet of paper pinned onto the school board with 7 purple pins. ‘It’s the new class arrangement! How could I have forgotten about it! I have been moved to a new class with 24 other classmates!’ shouted Claire. ‘Who are they! Alaire? Dlaire? Laire? Klaire? Qlaire? Zlaire? All of them are variations of your name!’ shouted Charlie. ‘All of them are new students. I just hope they can get along well with me.’ replied Claire.

After school, Claire and Charlie were chatting while walking back home. ‘Hi Claire, how was your day?’ asked Charlie. ‘It was horrible! All of my new classmates surrounded me whenever I’m in school and outside my classroom. I could barely see!’ replied Claire. ‘My day wasn’t good either. My class teacher Mr Thomas punished me and made me stand outside the staff room for all recesses this week just because I was late. No one believed me when I told them I saw Philip!’ replied Charlie. ‘Of course no one will believe you. You don’t even have any proof that you saw him. You also should not blame Mr Thomas too much. Although he is strict, he cares a lot for his students. I actually miss him!’ exclaimed Claire.

On the way home, Charlie saw a newspaper stand in a dark, narrow alley. The newspaper seller was in a black coat and has something that seems be a wand in his pocket. Charlie bought a newspaper there. It said,

‘Today, a sightseeing train flew out of its tracks and headed to space and back again. The poor tourists had a tour of outer space instead of the city. No one was injured. It is confirmed that a person gave that train a curse to catch the attention of two students called Charlie and Claire to make them late for school. That wasn’t the first time that person affected them. First, that person gave Charlie a spell twice which made him have nightmares in the hopes of him not going to school, but it failed both times. Next, that person spawned a pale version of Charlie’s mother and made her shoot Charlie, but it failed again. Then, that person used the pale version of Charlie’s mother and sister to chase him out of the city, but Charlie got on a bus. That made the pale version of Charlie’s mother and sister decide to flip the bus. Charlie got into a coma for three days in the end. The policeman who was at that scene was affected by a spell which made the pale version of Charlie’s mother and sister invisible to him. Finally, that person planned out the school bus crash and grabbed Phillip out of the scene in milliseconds so that people will think he was missing, but Charlie saw him on the street after the incident. Charlie’s sister- Claire was affected too. That person spawned in lots of new classmates to surround her. We are also aware that a fake version of Charlie’s mother was laying unconscious on the ground in her house a few days ago, but we do not know who/how it was caused (Very likely the same person who spawned the pale version of Charlie’s mother and sister). We do not know who did this or why he/she would do it.’

When Charlie and Claire arrived home, their mother snatched the newspaper. ‘I knew it!’ shouted their mother. ‘You knew what?’ asked Charlie. ‘Nothing! Both of you will know why you should not read this newspaper within the next few years.’ said their mother. Charlie whispered, ‘Our former English teacher Mrs Jamie definitely isn’t the one who caused this. She literally faints whenever she sees Claire or my face.’ ‘DON’T TALK ABOUT IT!’ yelled Charlie’s mother.

Finally we have the ending to this story. With the joint effort of our two teachers, and with a little help from our intelligent robotic ally, we have this:

The Truth Behind the Madness

Charlie’s mind raced as he stood in the schoolyard, staring at the sky where the train had floated just hours before. He knew he wasn’t dreaming this time. The train, the pale versions of his mother and sister, the disappearing man, and all the strange events—none of it made any sense. But deep down, Charlie felt certain that someone was behind all of this, pulling the strings.

After school, Charlie decided he couldn’t ignore the mysteries any longer. "I have to figure out who’s doing this and why," he muttered to himself. He didn’t know where to start, but he remembered the mysterious newspaper stand in the dark alley. The newspaper he’d bought there had mentioned everything he’d been through. Maybe the seller knew something.

The Newspaper Seller

Charlie sneaked out of the house that evening and returned to the alley. The newspaper seller was still there, dressed in his black coat, his strange wand-like object tucked into his pocket.

“Back for more news, kid?” the man asked, his voice gravelly and low.

Charlie hesitated but then said, “The newspaper I bought yesterday—it knew everything that’s been happening to me. How is that possible? And why is everything so strange around me?”

The man smirked. “Ah, so you’re starting to piece it together. You’re not crazy, kid. And you’re not hallucinating. But you’re in the middle of something much bigger than you realize.” He leaned in closer. “Someone doesn’t want you to know the truth. They’re trying to break you, make you question your own mind.”

Charlie’s heart pounded. “Why? What truth?”

The seller glanced around to make sure no one was listening. Then he whispered, “It’s about your grandfather. He left you something—something important. But you’re not supposed to get it until you’re 18. Someone doesn’t want that to happen. They’re going to great lengths to make sure you’re declared insane or worse before then.”

Charlie’s eyes widened. “What did he leave me?”

“Money, land, and… something else. Something powerful. I don’t know all the details, but it’s enough to make someone very desperate to stop you,” the man replied. “The pale versions of your family, the flying frogs, the train in the sky—all of it is fake. It’s magic, illusions designed to scare you, confuse you, and make you seem crazy.”

Charlie’s legs felt weak. “Who’s doing this?”

The seller shook his head. “I don’t know. But I do know that you’re not safe. You need to find the truth before it’s too late.”

The Fake Train and the Hallucinations

Charlie couldn’t sleep that night. He tossed and turned, his mind filled with the seller’s words. The next morning, he decided to confront his mother. She had been acting strangely ever since the newspaper incident, and Charlie was determined to get answers.

“Mom,” he said at breakfast, “why won’t you let me read the newspaper? And what did Grandpa leave me? I know you’re hiding something.”

His mother froze, her face pale. “Charlie, I… I can’t tell you. It’s for your own good.”

“Mom, please!” Charlie begged. “I’m not crazy! I know something is going on, and I need to know the truth!”

His mother sighed deeply, then motioned for him to sit down. “Charlie, your grandfather was a very wealthy man. He owned land, businesses, and a lot of money. But he also had… enemies. People who wanted what he had. Before he died, he left everything to you and your sister. But there’s a condition—you can’t inherit it until you’re 18. Until then, everything is held in a trust.”

Charlie’s jaw dropped. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because,” his mother said, her voice trembling, “the people who want what your grandfather left—they’re dangerous. They’re the ones behind all of this. They’re trying to make you seem unstable so they can take everything. If they can prove you’re crazy, they’ll get the inheritance instead.”

Charlie’s mind reeled. “The train, the pale versions of you and Claire, the flying frogs… they’re not real?”

His mother nodded. “No, Charlie. They’re illusions. Tricks. Someone is using magic or advanced technology to scare you. They want you to doubt yourself, to make everyone think you’re imagining things.”

The Newspaper Man’s Betrayal

Charlie decided to investigate further. He returned to the alley to confront the newspaper seller again, but this time, something felt off. The man’s smirk seemed more sinister, and Charlie noticed that his “wand” was glowing faintly.

“You knew all along, didn’t you?” Charlie accused. “You’re part of this! You’re helping them!”

The seller chuckled darkly. “Smart kid. Took you long enough to figure it out. Yeah, I’m working for them. But it’s nothing personal—it’s just business.”

Charlie felt a surge of anger. “Why are you doing this? Why are you helping them ruin my life?”

The man shrugged. “They pay me well. And honestly, kid, you’re just a means to an end. But you’re tougher than I thought. Most people would’ve cracked by now.”

Charlie clenched his fists. “You won’t get away with this.”

The seller laughed. “What are you gonna do, kid? You’re just a kid.”

But Charlie wasn’t alone. He had secretly brought Claire and his friend Philip, who had been hiding nearby. While Charlie kept the seller distracted, Philip used his phone to record everything the man said. Claire, meanwhile, grabbed the glowing wand from the seller’s pocket.

The man realized too late what had happened. “Hey! Give that back!” he shouted, but Philip and Claire were already running.

The Ending

With the evidence they had gathered, Charlie and Claire went to the police. They showed the video of the seller admitting his involvement and handed over the wand, which turned out to be a device capable of projecting illusions. The police launched an investigation and soon uncovered the entire plot.

It turned out that a group of people who had worked with Charlie’s grandfather had orchestrated everything. They had forged fake documents claiming the inheritance would go to them if Charlie and Claire were deemed unfit. The fake newspaper, the illusions, the pale versions of their family—it was all part of their plan to gaslight Charlie and take control of the inheritance.

The police arrested everyone involved, including the newspaper seller, and the court declared Charlie and Claire the rightful heirs to their grandfather’s fortune.

Years later, when Charlie turned 18, he and Claire officially inherited the estate. It wasn’t just money and land—there was also a hidden journal from their grandfather, explaining his life’s work and the secrets he had kept. Among them was a powerful artifact, the true reason his enemies had been so desperate to take the inheritance.

But Charlie and Claire vowed to use their newfound wealth and knowledge for good. They rebuilt their lives, stronger and closer than ever, and made sure their grandfather’s legacy lived on.

As for the mysterious train in the sky? It became a running joke between them—a reminder of how far they had come and how they had triumphed against all odds.

And Charlie? He finally felt at peace, knowing he wasn’t crazy after all.
