The opening engages the reader by demonstrating Sir Salvo's mistake in talking to a woman in Camelot. The etiquette in talking to a woman is that you are supposed to talk to her about the weather. Sir Salvo not only flirted with her, but kissed her as well.

The setting is in the middle of the forest in Camelot. It is the perfect place to not be seen and to hide out and do something wrong, just like Sir Salvo did.
