Nixon preferred foreign policy over domestic policy. His reasoning by this was saying "I've always thought this country could run itself domestically without a president," Nixon elected his adviser for national security affairs, Henry Kissinger, who played an important role in the foreign policies during Nixon's time. A major thing that Nixon agreed on and carried out was Kissinger introducing the philosophy known as realpolitik, which is from a German term meaning "political realism" This policy meant foreign policy should be based solely on consideration of power, not ideals or moral principles. To evaluate the nation's power, not it's philosophy or beliefs. This policy lead to the president's visits to other nations regarding foreign policy.

With Nixon and Kissinger both agreeing on the realpolitik policy, they formed their own policy called detente, which was aimed at easing cold war tensions. This policy was first enacted when in 1972, President Nixon, a strong anti-communist, visited communist China. Nixon announced in 1971 he would visit China "to seek the normalization of relations between the two countries." In visiting China, Nixon both was trying to take advantage of the decade long rift between China and the Soviet union breaking ties in 1960, and also successfully opening up diplomatic and economic relations with the Chinese.
