08.05.2018
We were supposed to start making our instruments yesterday in class during the afternoon. However, since we had several technical problems with the internet and computers, the presentations ended up lasting all day. It was a bit frustrating and tiring, but we got everyone to present their researches. So, after class, I used my free time to put together some materials that I had early separated to create my instrument and I ended up building a reco-reco along with a rattle.
Today, we got to know in which groups we are working. I found this scheme of forming the groups after each one has already created their own instrument very disorganized and a little clueless, but I ended up really enjoying the people who I am going to work with: Zaíra, Fred, and Jade. We took advantage of the day to finalize and give the final touch to our instruments; and, at the end of the lesson, we made up an action plan for us to get organized and accomplish our goals during these two weeks ahead. My group has very similar ideals and tastes, and all ideas are flowing well until now. I think we form a very good team!

09.05.2018
Today there was no class, but even so, my group and I decided to meet up on EBAC to work on our project. At the beginning, we were quite insecure, since none of us have musical experience and understands instruments very well. The first idea was to choose a well-known instrumental music and to make a reinterpretation of it using the instruments we created ourselves. We tried to divide each part of the song for each person, but this plan did not work out. We could not find the right tone or fit the instruments correctly into the music. Then, we decided to go to the photo studio, which was a very quiet place. We started to record the sound of each instrument, separately, doing several tests, erasing and re-recording several times. We used the garageband on Zaíra’s ipad and we were editing much of the music right there, at that same moment. It was a very organic and unpretentious thing, but we ended up finding a place for every sound and instrument. The result of the song was very funny but at the same time very disturbing. So, from there, we decided to do our project with a creepy and scary movie type style. This idea has further livened up our group and we are pleased with what we are planning.

10.05.2018
During the morning, Zaíra and I went to the mac lab, we passed all the recordings we did yesterday with her ipad to the computer and continue editing our music. The result was getting interesting, but we decided that it would be better to record some more sounds to have a larger amount of material to work on. We called Jade and Fred, and we went down to the second floor. As the rooms in there are empty, they cause an echo and we thought that we could use that feature in our favor. And it worked really well, giving a special and scary touch to our music. After all recorded and documented, we returned to the mac lab to finalize the edition.
Already in the afternoon, the four of us got reunited and started thinking about a brainstorm for our video. We thought how every noise and sound could be represented; and one of the very strong references we had was from the opening of the series American Horror Story.
Although things are going well and we are able to fulfill what we have planned, I feel that none of us are still really satisfied and safe with this project. And even with our love for music, we are not completely happy doing this work.

11.05.2018
Since Zaíra and Jade are from Moving Image, they went to the After Effects Workshop and were also encharged of making the animation. In the other hand, Fred and I, both from Visual Communication, stayed at the studio and we had to think about and develop a graphic score. We really did not know how to do it or at least where to start. This made us very upset with this task. But Ana and Daniel's lecture was very enlightening and helpful. They showed us several examples of artists who created their own graphic scores and all of them were a great source of inspiration for us. It made me open my mind and start having some ideas with Fred. In addition to the tutors talking to us a lot about this subject, exchanging ideas with us and giving names of artists for us to research, they did a kind of "game" with us where they put a song with their respective graphic score and, all together, we tried to guess what each symbol corresponded to in the music. It was a lot of fun and I started to get excited.
So, in the afternoon, Fred and I dedicated ourselves and focus exclusively on our graphic score. I confess that at the beginning it was still a little difficult and complicated, but, over time, we were getting the hang of it, matching all the ideas and we were able to create a symbol for every sound we made. We were super happy with our outcome and I felt that I surpessed another obstacle.

14.05.2018
For today, we already had a sketch of the graphic score and the first version of the animation done. Jade and Zaíra stayed Friday after class recording videos for our animation and, during the weekend, Zaíra edited everything, along with our music. I thought that Jade nailed it into the interpretation and would make a great actress and I was also very proud of Zaíra because although she does not have experience in video editing, she did an amazing job.
During the day, I stayed at the studio and started to think about a visual identity for our band and develop some ideas in my sketchbook. Some of the things we still had to decide were the band's and song's name. After many ideas and discussion, it was decided that our name would be “Psycho Club” and the song “Troubled Mind”. And after I created and developed some visual identities for our music, we decided, as a group, to use the ones with the skull and with the white eyes. I was extremely happy that we super focused on everything we had to do and we completed everything that was scheduled in our action plan. So, today we take our time to do extra things to add to our project and to give the finishing touches on our video. In the morning, while Zaíra was looking after the video, Fred, Jade and I made several different variations of the graphic score. We used paints, pencils, pens and charcoal in these experimentarions. I also used my time during the morning to develop extra things related to the visual identity of our song.
In the afternoon, we had the idea to take a photo for the “CD” cover. As we are basing our project on things of terror, we decided that each one would be a famous slasher: I was Jason, Jade was the Leather Face, Zaira was Freddy Krueger and Fred was Michael Myers. He had a lot of fun making this. We took several photos at the photo studio and I edited the cover very true to the style of our work.
These two weeks were very tiring and laborious, but, after all, our group was very pleased with everything we have done so far. We have the good feeling of accomplishment!

17.05.2018
One more project came to an end. And, although it was not one of my favorite projects, I really enjoyed working with those three colleagues who were in my group. We had a lot of tuning and everything happened as we expected. Our ideas wer almost always the same and when they were not, the idea of one complemented the one of other. We did not have any big problems. Besides all exchange and discussion, everyone in the group was a good listener. So, we'd sort it all out and make it all together.
Each one did his best and worked with what they liked best. I, as I am in Visual Communication, was one of those responsible for the graphic score and the visual part of the band/music. I was well pleased with what I was able to develop.
During the critique we had today, we received lots of positive feedback and praise for our work. Our classmates really liked our idea of taking our weakness (not knowing how to play instruments) and turning it into something new and very interesting (scary movie style). And I believe that the outcome we got from our project reflects on how well we work together.

21.05.2018
Today, we had class with Michael and he knew how to manage the time very well. He was able to pass on to us everything he had planned and I was able to absorb all the informations.
First, he read the briefing of the new project “The End of the World”, which I found the theme very interesting, and explained everything by topics. I had already read about this work over the weekend, but I had some doubts, so it was very helpful. He also showed several artists, such as Simon Spilsburg, Jody Hewgill, Takumer Homma, Alayna Danner, and Alberto Seveso who served as inspiration for me. From there, I already started to think about how I would do my project.
Then, we did an activity that stimulated our creativity. The whole class had to draw in the same paper things that Michael said (such as a dog, a tree, old people) while a music was playing; and when it stopped, we had to stop drawing immediately and move to our right to do another illustration. The result was very appealing and we were able to develop our skills in thinking and developing our ideas in a short period of time.
Finally, we had to get some images / pictures / drawings related to the project theme for references.
It was a very productive day and I'm very excited to start my illustrations on A2 paper.

22.05.2018
Last night I started to research and think about my story plot. In this project, we have much liberty to interpret, in innumerable different ways, how would the end of the world be like. However, I, particularly, like more things that are real and I saw that I would have many possibilities on working with the problm of the amount of garbage in the cities and in the environment. And some of my references were the movies “Wall-E”and “Cloudy With a Change of Meatballs”.
Today in class, during the morning, I developed the idea of my story better. I thought of people throwing garbage into the environment; this garbage starts to accumulate; pollution begins to spread and takes over all places; people start to get trapped in their own trash, and as a consequence, the world turns into a big ball of trash, leading to the end of the world. I also did some research on the different types of pollution and its consequences.
Already in the afternoon, I began to sketch the four illustrations for this project. I had to select what I would draw on each paper so that when put together, make sense and pass on the story I created for those who see my work. We also had to make an action plan for this two weeks and I realized that I will travel to my hometown during the holidays. So I had to think about a way to finish everything by Tuesday, may 29th.
I really liked what I came up with and I was very happy when I talked to Leo about my proposal and he liked it too. He also questioned me how I would illustrate the four pages and that is one thing I still have to decide. There are many options: collage, digital, hand drawing (pencil, pen, colered pencil, paint)... I am thinking of doing some experimentations in the next two days to see which technique will look better and make more sense to the theme I chose.

So I started to do some experimenting. The first one I tried was using watercolor: I did not like the result because the ink worked too hard on the paper and I too could not detail very well the situations of the illustrations as I wanted them to look. Secondly, I tried to draw with colored markers: for me, the result was even worse, because I could not find the right colors as I was imagining, the drawing was very marked and wet because of the markers and the colors did not blend. Finally, I tried to make with nanquim, one of the techniques that I like the most, and the result was very good: clean, with the necessary details, and in black and white, giving a special touch to the theme I chose.

As I had already chosen, I used nanquim pen and nanquim ink. I started by drawing the city, the buildings and some details, like the shadows. I was really enjoying the style of the drawing and how it was looking, but it had a small problem: I still did not know how I would represent the trash in my illustrations. I was thinking of something very real, to cause a bigger impact and I did not think I would be able to convey this, by hand drawing, all the trash. I then talked about it with Monique and, together, we came to a conclusion that would be super interesting to put, through photoshop, in the drawings that I will make real images of rubbish accumulated in the streets. She also told me about a website called cgtextures.com to get some pictures for free. I loved her help and I think the result will be very unusual.
In the afternoon, I used my time to begin, and also finish, the illustration of the second paper.

05.06.2018
In the morning, we made a visit to the Garoa Hacker Club. In its community laboratory, there are equipment to host projects focused on electronics, programming, visual arts and other creative activities. The most interesting thing for me was to know that they offer courses, lectures, workshops, in addition to having the laboratory available so that their regulars can develop projects freely. We had a long talk with Alexandre and although it was very difficult and I was a little lost a few moments, I found the experience of learning to use codes to create games, animations and drawings very exciting.
I would love to be able to develop a digital game using this technique that we started to learn today, but I think that because of the short time we have, I will end up creating an analogue one. However, learning codes is definitely one thing I want to dig deeper into.
After we returned to EBAC, in the afternoon Leo read and explained in detail the briefing of the new project. He also talked a bit about artists like André Breton, Cadu and Athos Bulcão, who served as some references to me. From then on, I've started to think and generate some game ideas that involves rules and chance.

07.06.2018
We started the class by creating our action plan for the next few days; and I have to highlight: this was the thing that helped me the most in part 2 of the course and in the projects. Detailing a plan outlining actions needed to reach specific goals is the best strategy to succeed. In addition, in the rest of the morning, I started to think about three different game ideas; thinking about the components, the objective and the rules of each one. By 12:00pm, I had already created the RANDOM SENTENCE, HEADS OR TAILS and COLORFUL EXPLOSION. I enjoyed the ideas a lot and had high expectations with all three games, therefore I could not choose only one. So, I asked some friends to vote on which ones they found most interesting and “Heads or Tails” ended up winning. From now on, I will focus and develop it in depth.
In the afternoon, we received the British artist Eleanor Greenleaf. She showed us and talked about some of her works, which are simply amazing, and she even taught us about the Game of Life created by the mathematician John H. Conway. After the little talk, she did an activity with us where we split into groups of three and we had to think about rules and create a game using a grid paper. Then, we would have to trade our game with another group and try to play their game. My group had a bit of difficulty in the beginning to unroll all the ideas but with much conversation and experimentation, we were able to complete the task. I found this workshop very important to understand the relevance of creating rules that are not only understanding to us, but to everyone.

08.06.2018
Today was the day to start producing the game. In my game, “Heads or Tails”, the components would be 1 giant coin (that I would have to make), 40 heads & tails instructions cards (20 for each), some sheets of paper and a variety of art materials. The idea of the game was to choose either heads or tails, flip the coin and the side of the coin facing up would determine what card should be picked. After picking the card, the person needed to do exactly what it tells to.
To start developing my game better, I made a list of things I would need to do it / build it.
Then, I had to start thinking about what heads and taisl meant in the game and what would be written in each card, because the idea was still very raw and the game depended exclusively on this. After thinking hard, I decided that the heads cards would be related to drawing and the tails related to challenges.
I stayed from 1:30 pm until 4:00 pm trying to develop the instructions for each of the 40 cards but I simply crashed. Nothing was going forward and my ideas stopped flowing. At this moment I'm very frustrated and sad. I’m afraid I’ll have to abandon this idea and start a fresh new one by this point.

So, I had to restart my research to create another game and start from all over again, since the beginning. After a long time, I came up with the idea, then, of trying to create an arcade game.
I thought of a theme related to space and several ideas began to appear in my head. I began to make a list of materials that I will need to build this game, like cardboard and marble balls and to think about the rules.
The game will be based on the following: you must put a marble ball on the rocket and try to deflect the holes in the space. If the balls go "onto de moon", you gain 10 points, but if it goes "back to earth", you lose 10 points. And the goal, of course, is to make it to the moon.
Now, all I have to do is focus and work hard this week so I can get a game ready and that works until the deadline.

I can not waste time and I have to do everything for my game to work out.
I started by cutting the cardboards and finding the right measurements for each piece. In relation to the design of the arcade, I thought it might also be interesting if it could look like a rocket / space-ship. And made it come true. I spent a lot of time also analyzing and researching how I would make the marble balls go to two different sides: "onto the moon" and "back to earth." It was very laborious and took a long time, but I believe it will work. I gradually built it during all day long.
Almost at the end of the class, I talked to Ana about my bold idea and about my new game. As it is not ready yet, it was a little difficult to explain to her, but she managed to understand and found it very engaging. The only thing she's really worried about is if I'm going to be able to finish everything on time and that the game will have functionality for people to play. I really like to build and DIY things, so I'm very confident. And also, since she is my tutor, I want make her proud and prove to her I am able to do it.

26.06.18
As soon as I arrived at the studio, I decided that the project that I was going to remake was the protest one. Looking at my original project and its outcomes, I believe that there is room for improvement; such as giving more the necessary information to the audience. The second step was to find a theme to protest about. The choosen one was the 2018 World Cup Harassment because it is a very strong topic, really recent and relevant, and also, since I am a active and assumed feminist, what is happening in Russia is bothering me so much! It is very disgusting how women is beeing treated. I did a quick research about it and I found many cases of harassments which were reported. I had access to a lot of information and it was very useful so I could decide what to write and what to show on my poster. Still in the morning, I chose how I was making the poster: silkcscreen. This decision was made because when I was looking at my portifolio planning, there was an observation pointing out experimentations missing using this technique.
During the afternoon, I sketched some poster ideas. There was a lot of good things and information about them; however, the problem was that I used too many colors. Marcelo adviced me that for silkscreen to suceed is better to chose only 1 or maximum 2 colors and I agreed with him. To help me even more, he showed me the May 1968 Protests in Paris as reference. Later on, I had a talk with Bea about my work and it was very useful. She gave me more references and also told me to think about a simple yet strong design for my poster and also to think about a clear message. So, I went back to the printing room and my ideas started to flow more easily. By the end of the day, I had created a simpler and direct poster, only using the colors black and red. I really enjoyed the final result and I can not wait to start printing it!

Any represention of harassment would be enough to pass the message I wanted to. So, I thought about drawing a girl, backwards, wearing a soccer shirt from Brazil and a man’s hand grabbing her butt. In this way, the harassment message became clearer.
I also wrote the phrase “is this fair play?” to put an emphasis on the sexual assault during the World Cup 2018.
I was pleased with the result and glad that I changed from the first idea because now it looks more effective and has a clear message for everyone, regardless of the video or not.

The process of printing is very simple after you understand how it works.
As our colleagues were printing their work, every result was different and the colors too, so at the end, we created a range of posters. One very different from others.
Doing risograph printing is doable as long as if you want o print more than 100 copies if not the price is not justified. I fell in love with this technique and hopefully I can do this again.
I loved the result of our poster. The decision of using the pipes was a happy idea, that came during the exercise we did yesterday. In addition, I hope I can take this idea further.

13.08.18
Working with the pipes for the risography experience, the organic design of this elements gave me more inspiration to reflect about their shapes. Thus, I decided to continue to work with this components in my project. Therefore, this element became the principal aspect of my narrative, which I thought about it during most of the morning; giving me more opportunities to experiment with composition and different techniques.
I observed that the red pipe is very contrasting compared to the other pipes of the ceiling. This turned out to be the main “character”/ protagonist of all my designs and narrative. I decided to make a very simplistic yet very graphic outlined drawing of some pipes and the red pipe would apear gradually in the sequence of drawings, intertwining through the other pipes. I used my iPad and the app ProCreate to make the illustrations.
At last, after talking to my tutor, I decided that making a zine to represent this narrative would be a great option.
The final result really pleased me and I believe the outcome is clean and sofisticated. Also, there is a clear narrative and everyone can understand what is happening and the story, despite having a text on it.

16.08.18
Today we were introduced to a new project that I, particularly, found it incredible! The main aim of this project is to develop ideas that can transform the architectural space of "Casa do Pequeno Cidadão" through art and graphic design interventions, such as playful signage and mural based art work. It is wonderful to be able to do something for a possible real customer. However, in this case, we have to be a little careful, since we are dealing with a delicate case. The institution welcome children and teenagers, until seventeen years old, in situations of social
vulnerability in which their basic rights have been violated, often victims of ill-treatment or neglect and abandonment, enabling them to be reinstated to their families of origin or into surrogate families through adoption.
I feel that most people, at some point of their lives, are moved by a work of art, regardless of what it is. And when we are touched, we are moved; we are transported to a new place that is, nevertheless, strongly rooted in a physical experience. We become aware of a feeling that may not be unfamiliar to us but which we did not actively focus on before. This transformative experience is what art is constantly seeking. I strongly believe that art can change the energy of an environment. I want to make the children and adolescents feel as comfortable and happy as possible in where they live and help them not only get to know and understand something with their minds but also to feel it emotionally and physically.
My partner for this work is going to be Bruna. So, in the afternoon, while we went to visit the site, we analysed each place together and took measures of the ones we got most interested to make the intervention. We are thinking about the second floor hallways or the TV room. We also thought about some ideas, such as an interactive mural, geometric forms and patterns. But, we still want to make a deep research to come up with an amazing result. I am super excited!

17.08.18
Bruna and I got reunited and started to think about our project. We know for sure we want to work on the TV Room, but don't know exactly how the intervention there will look like, yet. Each one of us looked on the internet for some references and did a quick research on wall art murals. We tried to find a theme to decorate the place and make it look happier; however, we struggled a lot because we concluded that it should not be too childish neither too adult, since both children and teenagers frequent this space. During the entire morning, we were not feeling inspired at all and we could not think of anything, and I started to get a little frustrated.
We went to lunch and this break was really important and necessary. We stopped to think on the project and in our creative block for a while. So, when we returned to class, some ideas finally started to flow. We made annotations of everything that was popping up in our heads and, in the end, we decided to make a under the sea theme. We drew many forms and sea elements in a piece of paper and also did a selection of colors. After that, we picked the elements we most liked and started to make a panel with them.
Nevertheless, both of us are not totally safe and happy with the result we are coming up with.

20.08.18
When I arrived at the studio by the morning, I sat down with Bruna and we discussed about our project. Both of us thought that the design we came up with on Friday had nothing to do with our style and identity. Plus, thinking carefully, under the sea has nothing to do with a TV room. So, we decided to change everything. We chose, then, to work with geometric forms. It is more neutral, we can make a lot of things with it and has more to do with Bruna and I.
Today, we also had the amazing opportunity to meet and have a class with Filipe Grimaldi, a lyricist who is one of the best artists in handwriting and hand lettering techniques nowadays. He taught us how to make blocked letters and how to paint with water-based enamel paint. During all the day, we painted a wall on the hallway with him and it was a incredible experience. I learned a little more about lettering, which is something that have always interested me and I was able to exchange ideas with this awesome artist. Besides that, making the mural with this type of paint we used can be a really nice option for our project.

21.08.18
Today in the morning, Bruna and I started to think and work on the design of the room using geometric forms. We did the same thing as before: each one of us made some drawings, in separate papers, using different shapes and then we put together all the designs to form one. I thought this way of working worked super well this time and we could managed to put the essence of both of us at the work and transform into one thing only. Bruna and I were super satisfied with the result now and started to get more excited with this project. We just did not know what colors we were going to use, we just knew we had to avoid too dark colors because the environment is already too dim. While Bruna set out to make experimentations using colored papers to decide which colors to use, I began to make a draft of the maquette, using cardboard paper and tape; nothing very pretty or perfect. It was really just to have a better sense of the space we are working on. I love doing maquettes and building things, so I had a good time making it.
After I finished the model, I went to help Bruna to cut out the colored forms and finalize the collages of the walls. I enjoy working with her because our ideas complement each other and we are always on the same page.
We decided to make a principal mural, which is located behind the couch, where will have the main information and the geometric forms all over the wall. The design will continue through the rest of the walls (unless the TV one), however with fewer forms and the forms will be more scattered, to give continuity to the main panel but without polluting the space. We believe that the TV is the protagonist and we do not want the walls, specially the ones more close, to compete with it.

23.08.18
We met today at Insign, a visual communication company with graphic solutions in digital photo printing, special parts cutting, modeling and cutting of parts in milling and digital manufacturing, plotting, solvent printing and vinyl trimming. I super enjoyed the visit and found it super interesting how all of these things work. It was amazing to see the processes of the different types of impression and cutting. Also, this company may be one of our options to make a budget for our project.
When we returned to EBAC, I began to decide the scale of the maquette while my partner decided the materials we would use to build it. I ended up turning the actual size of the room, in meters, to centimeters and then dividing all measurements by 10, a common divisor. I believe that, with these new measures, our maquette will be the ideal size for us to work and to show to our customers. Soon after, I spoke with Bruna and it was also decided that we would use coated styrofoam and adhesive for the model. I believe it is a great choice and I'm sure it is going to be all right.
In the afternoon, Monique also came to talk to us and see how our project is going. We showed our design to her and explained our decisions. She found it interesting and also thinks it will work out very well. However, she suggested us to change a little the design of the walls with the niches and with the windows. She said that if the design started up in the wall and then go gradually down, people’s eyes would turn to the television more easily. That made perfect sense and I totally agreed. So I went to the Mac Lab with Bruna, we vectorized the designs and made the necessary modifications.
I also had the idea to make mock ups of our design in the photos that we took from the room the day we visited the institution. But, when we went to look at them, the photos were not good enough. So, I vowed to learn how to use SketchUp, and make the TV room with our project in this program. It seems to be very difficult and complex; I am not sure if it will work. Nevertheless, I will do my best to achieve the desired result.

27.08.18
I went to class very excited today. That’s because it was the day we started making our maquette for real. On Friday, I was was not here, but Bruna had already begun to cut all the necessary and existing pieces of our model and also some details, like the three niches. Now, all that was needed was to put the all pieces together. Shortly after the register, I, together with Bruna, went to get our design stickers on Copyset. We were very happy that everything came out the way we expected.
As soon as we returned to the studio, we began to cut the stickers, shape by shape, and glued it to the coated styrofoam boards of our model. We also added some details that were missing: I cut the 3 windows and Bruna made the sofa. After all this done, we bought a very resistant glue and began to glue the walls with the floor of the maquette.
Everything was going well, but when we were about to glue the third wall, we realized that we had totally forgotten about the floor. There, in the institution, the floor made of wood, and we could not leave it blank on the model because it makes a huge difference when you are visualizing the design that we created for that specific environment. We spent a lot of time discussing and thinking about how we would solve this problem. Painting or gluing a brown paper were some of the ideas, but none of them were making us happy and satisfied. So, we thought that the best thing to do would be to print a sticker with a photo of a wooden floor, to be consistent and also to match the rest of the maquette. We sent the file to Copyset, but the sticker will not be ready until tomorrow. It was a little frustrating, because we had planned to have the model ready for today, until the end of the day. It is not a very serious problem, but I think we'll have to change our schedule a bit.
So, for the rest of the day, I focused on the Sketchup. It is super hard to use this program, but I'm very glad that I'm able to use it and create the digitallly environment true to our maquette and real room.

We went to Copyset before the class began to pick up our printed A2 sticker of the wooden floor.
After the register, we set our goal to fix the floor on the model. That took us a while because we just had only one copy of it, so we could not take risks and mess everything up. We glued it with great caution. It was a tense moment and it took a lot of attention and concentration. An, for our happiness, everything went well.
As soon as we finished the floor, we took care to glue the rest of the walls to finish our maquette. The result came out beautiful and I was very satisfied.
I used my time throughout the rest of the day to continue making the TV room digitally the Sketch Up. Everytime I use this program, I face some type of problem, because, as I said before, it is super hard to manage it.
