Reading William’s story on why she decided to pursue a career on bacteriology made me question how terrible healthcare workers were back in her day. Her sister losing her stillbirth baby during childbirth was terrible, but adding the fact that her sister nearly died due to negligence shocked me. I wanted to know if the attending physician was held responsible or if they were let off the hook. It’s no wonder why these reasons influenced William’s motivation to become a doctor herself.

The “wow” moment I had while reading her story revolved around her discovery of new cures for illnesses no one else could find. It was almost as if Williams refused to let patients due from rare illnesses, so she took it upon herself to find cures and save the people battling with such illnesses. Could her motivation to work fast and persevere be due to the fact that she nearly lost her sister due to negligence? Since Williams was capable and well aware of people dying from diseases, I think she refused to become a negligent doctor and let the illness run its course. This made me think that William’s has always lived her life in a “speedy” way since she worked faster than most people on quitting her job, pursuing a medical degree, and researching illnesses in hopes of finding a cure as soon as possible.

A "wow" moment I had was when I was reading about Nettie Stevens in "Headstrong". This chapter talks about how people used to believe that the sex of a baby was determined by environmental factors like temperature as well as factors such as nutrition. It was not until 1905 that Stevens set the science straight by figuring out that a baby's sex is determined at conception.

While reading Chapter 14 of The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, I questioned how William will continue to gain an education at a government-funded school. William had a lot of viability of his story through the media and gained a lot of opportunities, but I wondered how his talents could be used even more if he had proper schooling.

One thing that I was curious about from these chapters was from William’s chapter from “Headstrong” which is: what would have happened if Williams had not taken interest in solving an issue? She did not care for fame or for recognition; rather she wanted to address a medical need. Without her, I think that diseases might be much harder to handle or isolate without her contribution of creating the antitoxins.

One thing that I found interesting from these the chapters from “The Boy” would have to be how much William, his family and village needs to do in order to survive. William is able to do a lot to improve the conditions for his family with his inventions, but despite this, there are still a lot of issues that remain within Malawi that he can do nothing to change. I believe that is why I found it great he was able to speak through radios and tell his story, travel as well as attend conferences because not only did he have the chance to improve he and his family’s life but also the lives of others within Malawi. Regardless there were going to be diseases in the village, Malaria as one of the leading causes of illness but many of the villagers are able to survive these diseases because they have dealt with them so many times before.

A “wow” moment for me in “The Boy” is throughout these chapters, it was amazing to read how far William went in life. While reading, I wondered for him how he’d be able to achieve his dreams as he had many obstacles (such as not having money to go back to school) that stood in his way. His perseverance, followed along with his skills/talents made him unstoppable. Because he couldn’t go back to school, he gave back to his community by teaching the youth and encouraging their interest in science and building windmills, making his people aware of the HIV/AIDS crisis and what they can do to prevent it. He was a leader, and nothing less. I question how he kept himself so motivated during those hard times.

What amazed me about Anna Williams and her discoveries she’s contributed to the world, was her dedication and the overall passion she has. Her reason for going into this field and going back to school, was because of her sisters near death experience, after her stillbirth. These are the kinds of people who remind me of what good there is in the world. You take an ugly or tragic situation and turn it around to do something, whether big or small.
