The church was a part of the government system  and on one hand a lot of people and the  majority had strong faith in  religion thus they had control over the common people. 

Reason 2:
The Catholic  church   taxed people and had loads of land and huge finances.

Reason 3:
The church was the community center for society. Festivals, feasts and social gatherings and education were controlled by the church.
