The shoemaker is looking at Emilia’s baby for the first time and exclaims that the baby is a miracle. People today consider babies to be miracles too. When a child is born the reaction that is usually given is one of excitement and happiness. Giving birth to a child in the middle of a “crisis” is still considered a miracle to this day.

Florian has just gotten out of a fight with Joana where she calls him the Prussian. Florian reflects on that title and thinks about the future of Prussia and its inhabitants. Prussia was once a powerful empire, but was about to be demolished through this war. Conflicts with different countries are still happening today, and what could be a powerful country one day might be destroyed the next. Culture is incredibly important, along with keeping that culture alive. If that culture dies, will it be forgotten once it is gone?

Many students today can relate to having enough work for them to not be able to do the things they actually enjoy and want to do.
