PARENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

Hello Parents!

I recently learned that parent participation during school hours is not only allowed, it is encouraged. Several of you have expressed interest in helping out in class, so I have devised a plan to involve those of you that would like to volunteer.

The primary areas I want to focus on are reading, literacy, fluency and comprehension. Because my responsibilities are three-fold, (First, Second and Third Grades,) it is never easy to step away from the class in order to conduct a small group read-around. For that reason, I would like to have parent volunteers break off into small groups to help the kids with reading. This is something that anyone could do, it would free me up to conduct lessons inside the classroom, and I believe it would facilitate progress for these little readers. You would be working mostly with First and Second graders, but sometimes Third Graders will also join in, as they need to perpetually practice reading aloud, in order to improve fluency.

Thus, I propose the following: I have set up two time slots per day, one in the morning, one in the afternoon, each for 1 hour. It is not imperative that all these slots be filled, but it will be nice to have slots filled occasionally, and I can plan our weekly schedule based on when we have our parents volunteering.

I am excited about the prospect of having this help for my readers, but I am also open to feedback, suggestions and even requests if you feel you would prefer assisting in some other capacity. Also, let me know if you think I should structure the slot setup differently, or if you would prefer longer slots.

Finally, if you would like to earn your volunteer hours but simply can't give up your daytime hours, there is always something you could do for us at home/at night. Mostly this work would be in the realm of the preperation of class materials, and might include stapling, cutting, laminating, that sort of thing. Just throwing that out there!

Thanks, parents, for everything you all do, I am forever grateful to have been so fortunate so as to get a class with AWESOME parents. I appreciate each and every one of you.

Science Fair Project

The first step in this science fair project is to decide on the right science fair project question. This may be the most crucial part in the collaborative role you will play during this project, that is, to assist your child in picking a good project question.

In fact, we will be walking through every step of the scientific process in class, applying the steps to their individual projects, at least in theory. Hopefully, most of the boring stuff will be absorbed during class, leaving you, the parents, to focus on the fun.

Due to the availability of space, our due date for the science fair projects will be February 18th, so there is plenty of time to adequately prepare. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help your project objectives and/ or provide you with support. I will also post several other resources to provide parents with some additional insight into the project overall, and and choosing a topic.
