I really want to focus in on teaching theatre through a screen, not teaching film. We have a film/t.v. major on our campus taught by a wonderful man and I want to make a clear distinction between film/theatre. I love the medium of film for storytelling, but it's so different from theatre. How can I glean what I need without getting overwhelmed?

Thank you for your great course on mise en scene! I have a lot of great ideas now to use with my Drama 1 students in a virtual classroom. What are your thoughts on analyzing stills from old movie musicals? I know you mentioned the Sound of Music but I am thinking of some other theatrically filmed ones such as Singing in the Rain. Or maybe even some of the newer ones - the 2014 Into the Woods for example. Or maybe some Tim Burton films? I find his style to be more theatrical than many film directors. Since I am more comfortable teaching theatre than film, do you think those might be a good jumping off point? I am grateful. A few questions - do you assign the students to complete a shot for each unit (ie; mise-en-scene, cinematography, etc.)? Or one shot using all the elements? And with this shot(s) do they put together a shot to show they know the material or do they do a shot based on the story or monologue they are working on? I ask because yesterday you mentioned that students often liked using the long shot and dutch angle to just use them and with no purpose or reflection on the story.
