Recorded "The Wonky Donkey", uploaded it to YouTube. Laughed my way through the whole thing....multiples tries to record it--I didn't have my glasses on, my nose kept itching, a cat jumped in my lap and knocked the book flying...then the misery of trying to upload it on a very slow internet. I'm guessing they slowed it down today because this isn't usually a problem.

As I was watching this video, it brought to mind a FB post by a friend of mine...she wrote that the "Governor says we have to do this home crap through May but I'm not sure that Evan (her 13 year old son) and I both are going to come of us this gig alive" then her friends and her post their angst about these times and trying to help their kids with work. You might think these are middle class SES people, but my friend flies around in her family airplane. That kind of money...and they are all suffering the same way... So I took some of the journaling ideas as I was watching the video and texted them to her. She said she tried journaling, but it was pretty dark...and I told her that was okay- she was writing about what she was filtering during the day. Her daughter was keeping a journal of her experiences so she asked her daughter if she would share any of her journal writing with her...and she did. My friend texted me back and said I learned a lot today...

I think the sentence frames provide great support! (I worry they might only write one sentence...)

I think my SS team teacher and I might record our mini-lessons together. For the Venn diagram, maybe we will both personify a different pandemic.

Also, to supplement the articles and make the topic more engaging, I plan to link Brainpop videos (In a quick search I found videos about Black Death and COVID-19... Still looking for the 1918 Flu.)

I agree with Melissa. I am feeling a similar way. Plus on a personal note it is hard to balance everything. Being a single momma and helping my struggling fifth grader who has autism and my temperamental kindergartner while trying to do my best with work can be anxiety- inducing. But just trying to go day by day.

I love seeing teachers from all over the country come together on these zoom meetings. They discussed the Libby website (free e-book check out) that some of our KMS teachers have mentioned, using google forms to ask students what they are currently reading (or post on classroom), audible.com is free right now. So is PebbleGo and RAZ I believe. They discussed expanding our definition of text since there is "uneven access to physical books/ digital text." Short stories, graphic novels, pixar shorts. Kids can read on a phone (since most people, though not all, have phone access). Can do book clubs. Can do a digital reading graffiti on your google classroom where kids post quotes from books or other notes. Visually artistic way of sharing ideas. Or kids can take pictures of themselves with their books to post. Kids can video themselves giving book talks or they can host a zoom meeting. Can link a padlet to your google classroom.

I also like the mobile book library idea. I wondered if we could, logistically do a mobile book library for our students to return and check out books. I also found the list of book buzzes. I think that would be cool to try instead of the menu of choices. Also getting a video like the dog one and having them write about it would be super awesome. I think it would take a lot of participation, which I personally haven't had a lot of. But I think for even in class that would be a cool add in for writing about "reading"

My take-away is the "Donors Choose' where you can actually have books sent to kids; that sounds awesome! I also noted that they shared how we need to get out of the box and not just think of the written text, but use the video clips for our IEP's, and have students use written expression in other ways that are more relevant to them, other than just writing a summary, or a narrative. Again, it pointed to student-choice as long as the content is viable that they share. They had so many great ideas, i.e. "Book Buzz." I would love to see some of them take off and run with their own ZOOM Book Clubs and share the clips. That would be awesome!

I really miss my kids. When we did the Zones of Regulations, most of them were truly sad that their year was over in the classroom. Even though we have heard from several of our kids, many are still not connecting which makes me very sad. This was a special group this year and it was cut short so suddenly. I really miss my Advisory students, many in need of daily support, often that just being a hug and affirmation. I worry about some of those students.

I learned that students can take charge of several areas of virtual learning. These areas include creating video Book Buzzes, being Virtual Reading Buddies (via phone, Zoom, snapchat, whichever vehicle is available), sharing ideas for building their lives as readers during Emergency Remote Learning time.

One of my take away was providing prompts to family's is a good way to get family's started on the journaling process. Making sure students know that poetry, letters, lists all of the different writing students have done so far this year can be used in a pandemic journal.

A take away I had is that kids are already ahead of teachers with technology, so we should set them free and see what they can do. As teachers we have to encourage them to fuse analog with digital so they can communicate and share what their reading and writing life is like.

I was on a conference with students when the governor made his no more school decision. And I had to fight tears because they were just so sad, and I had students DM-ing me on instagram asking the same thing. And it was just hard. But since then I've been like super charged. I have felt motivated. I've been reading a lot of PD and watching various zooms and listening to various podcasts all regarding students and parents and virtual teaching.

His webinar was full of good information. He had teachers who signed up for the webinar submit what was working, then he curated all of the resources and presented them. There were people from all over the world participating! Over 300 participants. When Charlene shares the video it'll be worth the watch. It's short, too he kept it to around 45 minutes. As Charlene said we were like squirrels trying to Google his apps, etc. Hopefully, I was successful in putting his link down below to his resources. I checked the link, it works even though it looks like a weird gray rectangle with more shapes within....

Rubrics instead of grades that track their progress towards a goal. He mentioned: cultofpedagogy.com and GRIT which is for the students to self-assess their progress.
4.

Today I dove a little deeper into synchronous teaching. Over zoom, I taught a student how to post a song to the J.O. kelly Expression Wall. I could not screen share because he was on a phone; however, inspired by Langston, I just held my phone up to the camera and walked him through it. Checkout the beautiful song he chose.
