In Agatha Christies and then there were none, as the group shrinks, the characters actions and behaviors shift dramatically, exposing their personalities and motives. Initially, they appear to interact in a very formal way, denying accusations and attempting to maintain order, but suspicion quickly grows. For example, lombard states "We’re all in the same boat. We’re all potential victims!" showing the group's growing paranoia and lack of trust. Protecting oneself becomes a priority, with lombard arming himself with a revolver, while vera is burdened by the weight of her guilt, haunted by her past crime and the eerie rhyme of the nursery song, repeatedly saying, "I’ll never get away from it." The isolation amplifies their guilt, leading to emotional breakdowns and irrational actions. Ultimately, the true natures of the characters are revealed.

In chapters 8–10 of and then there were none, christie employs foreshadowing and suspense to heighten tension as the characters begin to grasp the seriousness of the situation. The recurring themes of the nursery rhyme "Ten Little Soldiers" ominously foreshadows the method and sequence of the murders. For instance, General Macarthur states “There’s so little time… I’m quite sure now… I shall never leave this island,” hints at his impending and unavoidable death, creating an atmosphere of dread. The discovery of the missing figurines on the dining table, corresponding to the murders, intensifies the unease and hints that the pattern will continue until none remain. Christie builds suspense through the claustrophobic setting and growing paranoia among the characters. The storm, described as a “beast ready to pounce,” isolates the island further, cutting off any hope of escape or outside help.

1) The theme of justice remains prevalent in these chapters. The author develops this theme in a twisted way, as all of the guests on the island had been guilty of murder; and they are all facing an unexpected demise. Throughout chapters 8,9, and 10, the guests appear stressed and panicked, fearful of whoever might be the killer's next victim. In chapter 9, Vera says: "I can't believe it... I can't." highlighting her immense horror and disgust. The idea that a group of murderers are trapped in an island, slowly facing their retribution, makes for an interesting story and a frightful experience for all of the characters.

It creates an animosity filled with fear and obsession, as each character wonders how the next verse might apply to them. This symbolism employs an atmosphere of certainty, driving home the idea that no one can escape their fate. A verse that explains such is "Eight little soldier boys traveling in Devon;
One said he’d stay there, and then there were seven.” This verse corresponds to General Macarthur’s death in Chapter 9.

The isolated setting of Soldier Island amplifies the tension in these chapters by creating a sense of inescapable doom. Cut off from the outside world with no way to leave or seek help, the characters are forced to confront the realization that the murderer is among them. In addition, this is evident in chapter 9, where the inability to escape is emphasized when Lombard notes, "We're not going to leave this island. None of us will ever leave." This statement employs a sense of entrapment, as the remoteness of the island leaves the group to delve into feelings of paranoia and suspicion.

2) The setting of this story helps to amplify the tension in these chapters. The guests are trapped on an empty remote island with nothing but a modern house. The solidarity of the house provides an earie feeling and a sense of dread, providing an uncanny and sinister atmosphere. Furthermore, the author attributed the trait of modernity to the house in order to create an unexpected ambience. This is because houses in these kinds of stories are usually expected to be abandoned and dilapidated, a stark contrast to the condition of the house in this story.

They try to come to terms and accept their past actions, such as when General MacArthur admitted that he "sent Richmond to his death."He says that as he realizes that there is no point in lying when they are all going to die anyways.

In Chapters 8, 9, and 10 of And Then There Were None, the characters begin to privately confront their past actions as the psychological pressure intensifies. Vera Claythorne, haunted by the death of Cyril, tries to rationalize her innocence but is visibly tormented by guilt. Similarly, General Macarthur resigns to his fate, reflecting on his role in the death of Arthur Richmond with a sense of despair. Meanwhile, others like Philip Lombard and Anthony Marston show little remorse for their crimes, viewing their actions as justified or inconsequential. As suspicions grow, the guests' reactions to the accusations expose their varying degrees of accountability and guilt, further fracturing the group dynamics.

4 In these chapters, characters begin to admit their guilt, either openly or through introspection. For example: Dr. Armstrong reflects on his carelessness that caused a patient’s death. Vera Claythorne wrestles with her memories of the kid drowning, questioning her own motives. These moments show how justice, even when delayed, cannot be avoided as the truth inevitably surfaces.
