Throughout my schooling, the topics I remember the most are the ones that incorporated visual and hands on crafts. In elementary school we were doing a unit on the Ocean and some of the animals and characteristics that helped make up the ocean. The reason I remember that specific in detail is because of the artistic work the teacher put into it. In the classroom we had a whole corner of the room completely transformed into what really felt like the ocean. There were streamers and blue plastic lining the ceiling and walls; there were very well put together ocean creatures and plants; there was an incredible amount of work put into this project and it has always stuck in my head. To this day I have found that I still prefer to learn this way, specially if I get to be creative! Even if it is a topic that is a little dry, if I can get my hands on some crafts to get it done I'll do it in a heartbeat!

The reason that stood out as applying to me the most was reason number 2 "The Arts Encourage Joyful, Active Learning". When I have hands on messy, creative, imaginative learning I am learning the best way I can. Not only am I learning best that way, but I am so happy doing that way as well. So learning with art not only helps to teach me efficiently, but it also helps my personal and spiritual well being, double win!

One major thing that I have noticed in my continuance of education and Elementary work is how much everything has shifted to online or technology. I'm not saying its a bad thing that I have had to learn to create projects online, because I have learned so much, and I can create so much with a whole world of help at my fingertips. I just wish there was more of a variety of choices and options for hands on activities sometimes is all, specially for Elementary children. I very much agree with the article 'What You Can Do When the Arts are Missing from Your Elementary School' regarding the more concentrated areas of learning being testing and core standards, but I believe that art is a core standard too in Elementary. Kids have a huge imagination and learn so well with crafty, hands on art content.
