The book starts of with Beatrice in her home in her faction-born Abnegation. She is just turning 16 and when you turn 16 you choose which faction you would like to join. Abnegation, Candor, Euridite, Dauntless, or Amity. She will under go a test before she chooses that will tell her which faction traits she most has and will be the best faction for her to join. She goes through this text finding out she is suit for more than just one faction, she is what they call divergent. She is conflicted by this not sure which faction she should join. She has struggled her whole life determining which faction would best suit her. Theme Statement: Our entire life on earth is based on finding our our selves and our identity.
Evidence: Tris was faced with two options: remain with her family in the faction in which she grew up, Abnegation, or transfer to another faction and start anew.
Divergent places huge importance on coming to terms with your identity, and in the end, Tris has to accept that she will never fit perfectly anywhere; she simply has to form her own path through her own choices, one step at a time.
Fear:
Theme Statement: Fear can shape out ones life, as if they are afraid to step into a new atmosphere they can miss out on big opportunities.
Evidence: Tris faces her largest fears she has and must come to control them.
Tris asks herself about fear, is it merely being stronger than someone? Is it an absence of fear entirely, or is it the power to overcome fear each time it threatens to consume you?
Secrets and lies:
Theme statement: You will never prevail if you keep secrets from yourselves and others.
Evidence: Tris keeps her divergence a secret.

Family will always be there for you and pic you back up when you're done.
Evidence:
Tris mom sacrifices herself for her.
Tris believes in her family even when she should be believing in her faction over her family.
Power:
Theme Statements:
Power can give you everything you ever wanted. but at what cost?
Evidence:
One of tris's best friends Al tries to kill her so he can pass her in ranks to stay in dauntless.
Euridite controls the dauntless members and makes them attack the abnegation and overrule the government for power.
