Egeus

Controlling father of Hermia. He's furious about Lysander and Hermia's relationship so he confides in Theseus to 'put the law' on his daughter so she will obey his orders. That is until we see Theseus overriding his orders for Demetrius to wed his daughter Hermia and instead have the couples settle for 'who they truly love'.

Hermia

Daughter to Egeus. She is to be wed to Demetrius under her father's influence though she is in love with Lysander. She is given the option to marry Demetrius, become a nun or die. With this her and Lysander make plans to run away together in the woods. "where nothing bad can happen". Her and Lysander are finally in the woods where they eventually grow tired and go to sleep. Hermia awakens from a nightmare where a snake ate her heart and Lysander laughed at her wounds. She calls out for Lysander where he is nowhere to be found. Hermia eventually stumbles upon Demetrius where she assumes he killed him. That is until she arrives alone to find Helena with Lysander and Demetrius. She begs Lysander to answer why he would leave her. She is told she is unloved by him and hated. In a denial effort Hermia clings onto Lysander where she is prayed off and told by Lysander that he hates her. She thinks the only possible way this could happen is by Helena, Helena must've stolen Lysander from her! She goes to fight Helena and restrained until they all storm off. They all wake to find everything has been felt as a strange dream. They are found by the Duke and Duchess of Athens of their wedding day and they all get married to who they truly love, Helena to Demetrius, Hermia to Lysander.

Lysander

Hermias lover. After the confrontation with her father and Theseus he decides it's a wonderful idea to make plans to meet in the woods and run away. "The course of true love never did run smooth" (1.1.38) Lysander plays into the completely co-dependent relationship trope as does Hermia. He and Hermia follow through with the aforementioned plans until they grow tired in the woods and decide to rest (separately of course). That is until Lysander for reasons labeled as 'maturity' falls in love with Helena who also happens to be the first person he sees upon waking. He tries to convince Helena of his newfound love until her ex Demetrius is trying to win her back. His loathed past love (Hermia) is trying to win him back as well to which he tells her he doesn't love her and shakes her off. He goes to fight for Helena's love against Demetrius until when he goes to fight he can't seem to find him. He falls exhausted and when he wakes it seems that everything was a strange dream. He is found by the Duke and Duchess of Athens and gets wed to the true love of his life Hermia.

Demetrius

In love with Hermia and is given her fathers blessing to marry her. Though he isn't as in love with her as Lysander as he fell in love with her looks rather then who she is as he immediately dropped Helena to be with her. He finds himself in the woods alone with Helena after he is told of Hermias plan. Helena pursues him as he tries to get away. That is until he loses Helena and arrives with Hermia, arguing until he falls into sleep and Puck puts the love potion in his eyes. Furthermore he falls in love with Helena, which creates conflict between him and Lysander as he to had fallen in love with Helena (under the aforementioned love spell) and they go to fight. Until Puck tires them out and they fall asleep. Demetrius wakes up still in love with Helena and is discovered by Theseus and Hippolyta, thinking it was all a dream. He is then wedded to Helena in a triple wedding with the rest of the lovers.

Helena

Best friend to Hermia, she is still in love with her ex Demetrius (who is to wed her) and is quite fed up with the whole situation. She is upset and confides in Hermia to tell her how she got him to fall in love with her to which her answer isn't satisfiable. Helena is aware of Hermia's plans to meet in the woods and run off with Lysander. So Helena decides to create her own plan and tell Demetrius of Hermia's plans. So she can meet Demetrius in the woods so he will finally see her and hopefully fall back in love with her instead. She eventually gets Demetrius alone with her in the woods where she tries to pursue him to which he promptly denies her and runs from her. She proclaims her devotion even going so far as to state "I am your spaniel;and, Demetrius,/ The more you beat me, I will fawn on you." (2.1.207-208) Helena grows exhausted and soon finds Lysander lying asleep on the forest ground. She goes to wake him (unknowing that he has a love spell on him) to which he wakes and falls in love with her. Helena feels mocked and stumbles upon Demetrius as well (who just as well has a love spell on him). Demetrius promptly falls in love with Helena as well all the while Helena thinks shes being truly made fun of. Helena only truly grows offended at Hermias arrival and reaction as she too seems to be 'siding with the men'. Her and Hermia get into an argument/fight as Hermia thinks Helena stole Lysander from her and Helena is quite obviously offended at the accusation. They storm off and eventually fall into sleep where everything they experienced faded into that of a dream and everything seemed to turn out how they wanted. Demetrius is in love with Helena and Lysander is in love with Hermia. They are found by the Duke and now Duchess of Athens on the day of their wedding and they all get married.

Theseus

Theseus is to be wed to Hippolyta after defeating her and is determined to make it work. He is the duke of Athens. He assists Egeus in his family matters by giving his daughter Hermia (who wants to marry her love Lysander instead of the guy her father picked Demetrius) three options, to wed Demetrius, become a nun, or to die. Theseus and Hippolyta's wedding day comes and he finds the lovers (Hermia,Lysander,Demetrius, and Helena) out in the woods while hunting with his wife. He decides they are all to be wed and that they do.

Hippolyta

Hippolyta is to be married to Theseus after he defeated her and she is dreading her newfound marriage. She is the (former) queen of the Amazons (which is composed entirely of man-hating women.) Hippolyta is completely dreading the day that is to come that day being her and Theseus' wedding day. Until she eventually comes around to the idea as at this point she tries to 'make the best of it' so to say. The day comes and she is wed to Theseus along with the rest of the lovers.

Oberon

The king of the fairy realm. Is married to Titania. Is ex-lovers with Hippolyta. Oberon and his wife Titania are at odds with each other when she decides to take care of a little Indian boy (which Oberon is jealous of). Thus he wants to take in the Indian boy for himself to make him his apprentice. He decides the best course of action is to put a love potion in Titania's eyes, so she will become infatuated and distracted with the first thing she sees so he will be able to take the Indian boy from her. He follows through with this plan (to which she falls in love with a donkey, a.k.a Nick Bottom) as well as making the decision to instruct Puck to put the love potion in Demetrius eyes to make him fall in love with Helena, when Puck slips up chaos ensues until Him and Oberon can fix it. He then takes the spell off of Titania and gets his wife back, realizing the little Indian boy wasn't what he wanted all along.

Titania

Queen of the fairy realm. Married to Oberon. She is an ex-lover with Theseus. Her and her husband are in an argument (an argument which is actively messing with nature) over a little Indian boy which she is raising. (the little Indian boy is the child of a follower she had who passed) Oberon insists on keeping the boy as his servant which she obviously refuses. She then decides to take a nap and when she wakes she finds herself head over heels for a donkey... (Nick Bottom). She becomes so infatuated in fact, that when Oberon asks her for the Indian boy she agrees, no argument. That is until she settles to take a nap with her new love and wakes to find it all was a strange dream. She sees Oberon and they're back to their old back and forth dynamic.

Puck (Robin Goodfellow)

Oberon' s servant. Puck is introduced as a trickster character. Puck's first task under Oberon is to fetch him a flower struck by cupids arrow so he may use it on Titania to distract her while he takes the little Indian boy. He does just that and is also instructed to find a man in Athenian garments who is at odds with his lover and to give him some of the flower so he will fall back in love with her. He also does just that and everything seems to be settled. He goes to cause some mischief on his own accord when he turns actor Nick Bottom into a donkey! He also witnesses Titania's newfound infatuation with Nick and thus goes to report back to Oberon on its results. Oberon is ecstatic. That is until Hermia and Demetrius arrive and she is accusing him of killing Lysander when Puck realizes his mistake. He put the love potion in the wrong person's eyes. Oberon thus puts the love potion in Demetrius' eyes making him fall in love with Helena, all the same with Lysander. This causes them to want to fight for her love where Oberon orders Puck to "tire them out". Puck runs around the forest calling for each of them in each other's voices and moving so they'll run to see there's no one there. They fall asleep where he promptly gives Lysander the antidote. Oberon and Puck arrive to see Titania's whole affair where Oberon gives her the antidote and all is well.

Nick Bottom

Absolute diva, wants to play almost every role in the play they are hosting. Though he is eventually pinned with the character of Pyramus (basically Romeo). His rehearsal starts and is going mediocre, and after he reappears after giving his line, Puck turns him into a donkey. The rest of the men scream and run in fear while Nick is left completely unaware. He thinks they are pranking him so he sings a song to prove he isn't scared. He is then taken away by Titania as she falls in love with him. "And yet reason and love keep little company together nowadays." He is doted on by Titania and her fairies until Oberon has him think it was all a dream. He then returns to the rude mechanicals right before they are to set up the play.

Peter Quince

(The director) Responsible for handing out the roles to his fellow players (actors). Their production is to rehearse in the woods. "where nothing bad can happen". They start rehearsing in the woods and it's going as mediocre as anyone would've imagined. That is until of course, lead actor Nick Bottom is turned into a donkey and Peter and the rest of his crew run in fear. Once Bottom returns Peter is directing the men for the setup for the play where he then begins his strenuous prologue. It goes as bad as it possibly could. That as well as the mixed up play.
