The research process is very important to me because it is essential to get the feel of the project at hand and it aids in the successful execution of the task. Ruth Carter said that art is like a prayer and I second that, firstly art is a gift from God to us as mortals to express ourselves, in a way art directly connects us as mortals to a higher power hence making it like a prayer. Being able to create art is a blessing from God but its the responsibility of the artist to feed their own craft and to evolve their abilities.
Responsibility is a state of having a duty to deal with something, hence you should be held accountable for said duty, while response-ability, is just what it says, the ability to respond. Response - ability has more to do with action.
Costume design is a way of telling a story because the costumes are normaly what the viewer sees first, it is in essence a first impression of the play, movie ect. It tells the story of where the characters come from and where they are heading for example an orphan will normally be depicted wearing rags amd torn clothing, and that makes the story more believable. If we have a look at how movies where made before there was the modern television, the visuals where the story teller rather then the script.
I'm hoping to connect with my voice by learning new artforms and techniques, to express myself more and to give others a better insight into my mind. I want to have a better understanding of who I am as an artist and also who I want to become as one.
The movie inspired me by showing me that anything is possible if you take the chance and if you believe in yourself.

British Vouge February edition

The cover of British Vouge February edition sparked a lot of controversy because of the way that black woman have been depicted. Not only was this the first time that a black woman have been showcased on the cover, but there was nine of them.
To me the magazine is a perfect example of lightskin privilege, because the woman in the middle is noticeably lighter of complexion then the other girls in the same picture, further more she has been placed in the middle to bring her forth more. She is also the only woman that has a piece of red in her outfit, directing the eye of the viewer even more towards her.
The woman have been westernized as their hair is not even in its natural state. If the ddirectors wanted to highlight the modern day black woman, they should have showcased them in their natural state and wearing something that is more complimenting to their skin.
The cover is very dark and menacing because of the flushed out colors.
"The angry black woman"
This is what came to mind when i saw the picture, It symbolizes the narrative that black woman have this mean demeanor and I don't think it was done purposefully but the tones that where used conveyed this message.
"Funeral"
This was one of the words that came to mind when I saw this cover. The blacks worn in this cover gives the cover a feeling of sadness and mourning as wearing black is associated in modern day culture as mourning. They look on edge. The woman have been made darker then they are in real life, take Lupita Nyong'o as an example, she's way lighter in real life then what she's been depicted on the cover. This makes her aura feel darker and ominous.
I can almost feel the puplishers saying "you wanted black, so I'll give you black"

This cover of Naomi Campbell gives off a warm and inviting feeling, not only because she has been photographed with her baby, but also because of the lighting that has been used. All her beautiful tones in her skin is been shown and the background is lit up better then the background of the February cover.
"Maternal"
This is what came to mind when I saw this cover, it exudes love and care as she is holding her baby in a protective way. It makes me feel warm inside as all the details can bee seen because of the lighting. The has a natural hair style and that gives off a feeling of confidence and strength. I'm not sure if it is because its "Naomi Campbell" that the cover has so many details and is been depicted as somewhat of a goddess ( Aphrodite).
Her face is lit up perfectly to show the softness and grace of her demeanor, you can clearly see her eyes and that makes the picture more inviting and loving. Her hands are open and that makes it more welcoming and forgiving. Her ring is lit up just enough for the reader to notice so that gives the image more of a feminine matriarch feel. It shows shes happily married hence giving the cover more loving.

All and all, both of the covers where needed for the black culture and for representation. While both of the pictures are very different, both of them are still very beautiful and information rich. At the end of the day its art and its needed.
I prefer the March cover just because its inviting and more forgiving. Its easier on they eye and well lit up. It showcases the natural beauty of a black woman and motherhood.
They are very contrasting and communicate very different messages. Everyone knows Naomi Campbell and that makes the March cover a bit more appealing to the viewer just becase shes well known and shes being depicted as a motherly figure. The light hits all her highpoints of her face hence illuminating her beautiful features and natural beauty.
The gray background is easier on the eye and gives a certain type of ambience to her already radiating glow. It compliments her so well that it makes the consumer feel more attracted to this edition.

My favorite art piece is the one by Dean Hutton.
The art piece showcases the complexity of the gender queer body.It invokes a feeling of appreciation of the unconventional body, by showcasing what transgender bodies look like. It is unapologetic and can be interpreted as a provocative piece to people that are not exposed to nudity. To me it speaks voluemes as it is displayed in the middle of the gallery (no one can miss it) it is a huge statement in the sense that it screems look at me , "look at us "- gender queer minority. It is the voice of those who are feel like they don' have a voice. It also empowers people that are seen as overweight in society as it represents the "overweight body " .The fact that it is made out of golden material could mean that those types of bodies are also important, they are also valued and they also need to be seen . The genitalia are clearly visible and they are non binary- Female breasts plus male genitalia. The lines on the art work can be interpreted as stretch marks on the body. The mere fact that its just a body laying there (no face ) says that this could be anyone plus the unnatural skin color could be interpreted as racially ambiguous and inclusive to all races.

If this art work could talk to me , this is what it would say. "Look at me , I'm also important, I'm also valid , I'm also worth more then gold. My race , gender , body type and appearance doesn't matter. I'm just as important as a SIS gender person , I'm just as important as a skinny person. I'm just human and I want to be seen and admired. I want to scream out loud so that the people at the top can hear and see me . Don't feel intimidated by me , be in awe of my beauty. I am faceless , we're everywhere, you will see me from wherever you are. This is reality and there is no escaping my beauty. You'll feel uncomfortable but You'll get over it as soon as you embrace my beauty , you will find out that I'm actually soft and loving."

This art piece opened a new world of artistic expression for me . It opened up my eyes to a world of possibilities and self-expression. It is groundbreaking for the queer community and humanity in general. It gives a voice to the voice less and inspiring to people that struggle with body positivity, not only for queer people , it incluedes all people who have issues with who they are and who they love.

My least favorite art piece was the video of colored children playing pretend ,wearing rollers and in a sence mimicking the real life of a colored person in South Africa. It shows that colored children on our poor communities have to face violence and poverty in their everyday lives. It reminds me that our children grow up way different then privileged children do . It shows that they have to grow up much faster then children that grow up in the suburbs or more upper-class areas. They are in a sence robbed of their innocence early on in their lives , not by choice but as a consequence of their circumstances. This innocent game of playing pretend , actually gives us a deeper look into what these children face on a daily basis. It shows that children in poor communities don't have the correct role models if any they only have what they see and thats not the best role models to have . These children are exposed to a lot of trauma and its normal to them. There is a scene where the one child plays the role of a mother that had her children taken away from them and being afraid of a social worker because they dont have the means to take care of their children. She also plays a woman that goes through abuse at the hands of her partner. These children grow up thinking that this is how this are suppose to be. There is no one to show them the way because as soon as people "make it in life " they leave the community, hence only the people that are not as good of role models stay behind.

Artwork I don't like you because you make me think of a time where I was that child, where i was exposed to violence in my household. You take me back to a time that I'd rather not remember. I hate the fact that my situation that i was in , is not uncommon in colored communities.
Artwork eventhough I don't like you I'm greatfull because I learnt that this is reality and that there are still people going through similar situations on a daily basis. You showed me how far I've come as a person and that I've risen from difficult cercumstances. You have made me realize that I'm not alone. You have shown the world the real reality of the life of a less fortunate colored child in South Africa.
