-If anyone has a used pencil sharpener you would like to donate to the classroom, it would also be greatly appreciated. Ours is not working, and we will not receive our allotted classroom fund money from HCS for a couple of month.

Multiplication strategies continued. We have already discussed how the commutative property, arrays, and number lines can be used when multiplying. We also discussed how multiplication and division are related.

Writing:
We will begin writing our first personal narrative this week.

Multiplication strategies continued. So far in this topic we have covered:
- 2 and 5 as factors
- 9 as a factor
- Identity property (1x6=6) and Zero Property (0x6=0)
- Multiplying by 10
- Multiplication facts 0, 1, 2, 5, 9, 10
This week we will cover problem solving, and using models. We will have a review, and take the topic test on Wednesday.

Writing:
Personal Narratives

Social Studies:
This week we will continue talking about the globe. Students have a study guide in their binders that shows information they need to know about the globe such as continents, oceans, equator, prime meridian, latitude and longitude, and cardinal and intermediate directions. We will have a quiz on this sometime during the week of Sept. 9-13. There is a picture below of the one I created, if your kiddos cannot read their own.

Science:

Announcements:
- SOCIAL STUDIES TEST ON TUESDAY. This is based on our graphic of the globe. Students will need to know all of the things on that graphic (there is one below).
- Please check the email about the NEW permission slips that came home. Our field trip date changed to Sept. 20, so I will need the updated form in order for your child to attend.
- Fun Run on September 25th. Folders for money collection came home Wednesday.
- If you choose to purchase books from scholastic. Please don't forget to use our class code QPPYR!
- We will have a PBIS party in a few weeks. Students must have good behavior in order to be able to go. If a student has moved their clip down multiple times a month leading up to the party, then they will not be allowed to attend. So far, everyone is on track to attend!

- I am still missing quite a few permission slips and payments for our field trip on the 30th. Those are due by the 25th. If you are unable to pay the $10, please let me know so that we can see what we can work out.

-FUN RUN September 25.
-AR Ends October 4th! A letter came home a few weeks ago about how to keep track of your student's AR goals. Please remember that students do not get all of the necessary time to meet their goals during class time. Reading MUST be done at home in order for them to accomplish this. They are allowed to take tests in the morning time, and during reading centers.
- We will have a PBIS party (PBIS = positive behavioral interventions and support) in a few weeks. Students must have good behavior in order to be able to go. If a student has moved their clip down 3 or more times in a month AND/OR has 5 or more pieces of unfinished work, then they will not be allowed to attend.
-Fall Break is October 7-11!
- Field trip forms/money due by Wednesday. Our trip is on the 30th. If you volunteered to chaperone, you can meet us at the school at 8:15. We will leave around 8:30. You an drive or ride the bus.

Homework:

This week we will be reading Boundless Grace, and Amazing Grace. We will continue talking about making inferences about the character based on the character's actions and the illustrations in the book. We will also be discussing character development.

Math:
We are beginning Topic 4 on division strategies. Please know that if you would ever like to know more about what we are doing, your child has an online textbook. You can find it by going to their Clever account, clicking on Pearson EasyBridge, click the Pearson Realize icon on the right, and then go to the correct topic number under the green "browse" section. Your child should be able to answer the following questions when we are finished with this unit.

How are multiplication and division related?

Writing:
This will be our last week writing Personal Narratives.
We are also working very hard on our cursive. We will have a cursive assessment coming up very soon. Your kiddos have worked VERY hard on their cursive, and it is looking BEAUTIFUL!!

English:
We will continue working on compound and complex sentences, and deciding which conjunction to use.

Social Studies:
We are studying how humans, and the environment interact.

Science:
AMSTI Heridity and Diversity - We will continue studying plants and their growth cycle. Then we will be moving right into studying a little bit about the skeletal system.

September 30 - October 4

Announcements:
-AR Ends October 4th! A letter came home a few weeks ago about how to keep track of your student's AR goals. Please remember that students do not get all of the necessary time to meet their goals during class time. Reading MUST be done at home in order for them to accomplish this. They are allowed to take tests in the morning time, and during reading centers.
-Fall Break is October 7-11!
- Field trip is on MONDAY. If you volunteered to chaperone, I will see you at 8:15 on Monday morning! :)
- Because of Winn-Dixie celebration: For our kiddos who do not participate in GATE on Wednesdays, we have been having a book club during that time. We are almost finished with our book, Because of Winn-Dixie. Your child should have received an orange form for permission to watch the movie during lunch, and a list for a few goodies to bring. We have SEVERAL people who signed up to bring a jar of pickles, so if you would like to bring something else, let me know.
-New seating arrangement: I have had quite a few parents request a new seating placement for their child. Please know that I want to honor your requests as quickly as possibly, but making a new seating chart is somewhat like rocket science. I will be switching everyone's seating arrangement after Fall Break.

Homework:

- Memorize Multiplication Facts!! At this point, students should have almost all of their facts memorized. It is CRUCIAL that they memorize them, because everything we do from here on out requires automaticity with multiplication facts.

-AR started over this week. Students will have until Christmas Break to complete their second nine week's goal. Only students who obtain all of their points, and maintain an average of 85% will go to the AR parties. Students MUST make their AR goal 3/4 quarters in order to participate in the school-wide, PTA funded AR Mystery Trip at the end of the year.
-Character Parade is on October 25th

Social Studies:
As time allows, we will be doing some more study on the constitution, and declaration since we did not get to study it much on Constitution Day a few weeks ago.

We will be reading the story Brave Irene. We will be wondering and questioning, and using those questions to discuss the story. We will also continue visualizing and making inferences. Students can always practice these skills at home during their nightly reading.

Math:
This week we are moving into the properties of addition.

Writing:
We will continue writing fiction stories this week. We are currently working on personification. Students have chosen an object to write about, and they are writing about the "life" of that object. It sounds a bit silly, but it always ends up being a really fun piece of writing.

English:

Science:
We are continuing our study of Water and Climate. We have been learning about the densities of hot vs cold water and air. This is a difficult concept to understand (since it's something we can't physically see with our eyes), but your kiddos have done a fabulous job grasping what they can about this concept.

- School-wide movie day. Students MUST have a permission slip in order to participate in the school-wide movie day next week.

Announcements:

Please make sure your child has headphones and a water bottle.
Remind your child that all third grade students will go to the gym in the mornings instead of the hallway. They will STILL enter through the front doors like normal. If your child arrives after 7:45, they will come straight to the classroom.
Lessons will no longer be recorded unless someone is absent. If someone is absent, the lessons will be recorded and uploaded into Schoology. (if your child checks out for an appointment, I will just catch them up when they return rather than recording)
I have not heard anything about dressing up on Friday, Oct. 30th, but I will send out an email when I get word if students will be allowed to wear their costumes.
We will be putting more emphasis on AR reading this nine weeks. Goals will be set in Renaissance Learning. AR is an INDEPENDENT activity. Students must read for 30 minutes each night, and are responsible for taking their tests when they get to school. They will have time in the morning when they get to school, as well as during reading centers.
