You shouldn't take everything a known and convicted criminal says as the truth. They could just be saying what could make them look better, and not exactly the truth. Since they have done this they could be trying to lie about some of the facts and what exactly happened during the robbery. Petrocelli and the others could be trying to make Steve look guilty based on the events by lying or not being completely honest.
