However I definitely found this difficult as my writing style is very unique and very stylised so working with people that were outside of said genre and people ive never worked with was hard. Despite this we came up with a couple ideas we could all work with however I found it very difficult.

The couple ideas we came up with and the way we got around the struggle was me deciding to change to an open tuning as all of our group was familiar with midwest emo and math rock in one way or another and I am quite familiar with this genre and know alot about writing music in opening tunings.

Prior to this we were playing around with a gaze pop shoe gaze style this worked but didn't feel very rewarding or as if we did anything great due to it not changing and being slightly boring even if we did complete all the prompts.

• Slowing down

For a start I found this quiet simple as I am very familiar with this writing and playing concept in music as I am very hardcore influenced in my writing style and hardcore uses alot of tempo changes in their music The easiest way to achieve this would be to slow down at the end of the song while still doing the same thing

• Triplets

I am also very familiar with triplet as triplets are used alot in metal and metal agacent music. The title track of my bands last album was built around triplet patterns and I have played this song many many times so I find it easy to write and play using these. The way I achieved this was by playing a lead line that was in a triplet triplet rhytmn under the other guitar.

I finally think that this could be very useful in writing my own music and may even take into consideration. Due to it meaning you aren't banking on your brain coming up with everything there guidelines however guidelines that won't restrict you. This could come up with some unique ideas and patterns in your music you never would've thought of before. One thing I took away from this was the idea of changes sections around to the way you'd normally write music one way I thought could be affect in my music was to write structure how I would normally then just framed a section to a different place in a daw and see what happens

The first one I saw and thought had potential was a Spanish sounding scale I had played in this voice note. Thinking this could be useful I playing around the scale with some open notes aswell I came onto this idea of descending down the scale with an open note between every note similar to besitos by pierce the veil.

I thought this could be very good with a double time drum beat at a faster speed to the an interesting feel.

I then recorded this into the daw but felt as if it was lacking something and equally wondered what I would do on the bass whether it could copy the guitar or do something else. I stumbled on the idea of the bass just playing root notes in the scale every two bars to give the illusion the riff notes are changing and to give each 2 bars a different feel even thought they aren't changing at all.

For the chorus I felt it needed a standard time to constrast on the verse to do this I set up a simple drumbeat then played along to it with chords in the scale I stumbled across using two chords next to each other going down three notes then two chords next to each other again with another guitar doing the third of each chord to give it more of a major or minor feel rather then just the fifth.

Then using the voice notes I stumbled across this riff idea of using a dissonance chord but with a major third below it arpeggiated. I thought if I managed to use this as a chorus melody and incorporate it into a major sounding song that could be very different. I started by contracting a major sounding chord progression using a vii,i,vi,v which also gave it an epic feel by resolving on the second chord which again I feel like was a great amount of contrast over the initial dissonance idea. surprising the dissonance being the main melody in this case works very well and sounds as if just using any normal melody.

An innovation taken with this song other then the initial dissonance was at the end changing tempo entirely and changing key and it almost being a totally different song and the use of ambient noises in this part to almost act as an interlude after the song and to convey a story in music with the doom of the dissonant notes with the major chord then the totally minor and feel of doom at the end as if the dissonance is some sort of evil the whole song trying to escape and finally got out at the end as if its the characters demons escaping and taking over.

We think that using Tempo changes and Key changes could be good representation of the emotions

We will be creating 2 tracks to show innovation. There are gonna be three main innovations included in the songs between the three of us

1 I would like to be included in these songs would be using latin style guitar inside of metal music as well as using dissonance in a more major sounding song could be very innovative. I would also like to include story telling inside of the musical songs and the writing

2 The main one that bryn is looking to achieve is story telling through lyric writing. As well as them being fictional stories with characters inside rather stories from personal experience

the main idea of the lesson was genre mash ups We approached this the way we always do just playing around in random keys and ideas until we find something that we think could be worked on.

Initially I came with this idea of this reverbd out slow riff that is very dark and almost very synthphonic and ambient then later in the song we went into a very djent inspired And rhymtic chorus rather then the slower more ambience verse riffs you could see this as already 2 genres then we went into a more opera inspired section in the bridge with opera vocals as well

I think this is a good practice due to playing in a. way you have never played before could unlock creativity that you wouldn't have noticed before due to you just locking into what you are used to and the normal

I think these are all good examples due to the contrast of metal artists working with rappers and hip hop artist to create an interesting fusion of genres and to create sounds. I think this is a good creative idea due to the fact new environments in any sense of the word can help with ideas coming out due to it not being what you are used to so you are less likely to fall intro routine

I think working with RnB artist would be great due to the fact in our music when its in its slower parts their definitely is RnB influence especially from bryn being a very big RnB fan as well as this I think this could over come some writers block as for a starts there is someone else working on the lyrics and aswell as it just being a different environment so it could cause creativity to come out that wouldn't normally if just fell into my regular writing routine

Whats different from our style

This question is very difficult due to the fact me and bryn take very heavy inspiration from pop, RnB and hip hop when writing music as well as all of us regularly listening to alot of music and are very diverse in our musical knowledge. And I even take alot of inspiration from drum and bass and dance genres in post production for synth sounds and fx in the songs

But I guess I could take more inspiration from more dance music when it comes to chord writing and basslines But other then that this is hard due to fact I very much look to artists like CHARLI XCX when it comes to song writing and production but then to Metalcore Hardcore and deathcore aswell Ive done this many times before for instance in the slowdown of masochits our song there is my personal recreation of the synth from club classics by Charli xcx in the bridge

Also I feel like the way modern metalcore is it takes alot from metal it takes structure and some chord progressions from pop then the breakdowns are hardcore influenced yet could be seen very similarly to dance genres such as drum and bass structurally and production wise

The initial planning was to get with a group of familiar people as well as some people we had never worked with before to give a good mix in creativity and musical styles and techniques. We came to the idea of me bryn and John as we will be working together in the final assessment as well as being in a band so we know how to write with each other and have a familiar writing routine. As well as bringing in holly as she has large influence from soul music as well as coming from a musical theatre background. Then looking for one more person we stumbled across harry being another good idea as his blues background could come in handy to come up with new ideas and techniques I wouldn't have thought of before.

Firstly the guitar I brought (by accident) Was broken so I thought to get a bass out of the store cupboard and run through a guitar tone using The LINE 6 POD GO to come across a 8 string sort of tone similar to loathe and some sleep token tracks this came in handy due to it being something new and exciting.

Further more Holly and bryn singing together Had a vocal effect pedal that included autotune, vocoder, delay, reverb and formant shifting and they as a duo came to the idea of creating a contrast in the two vocals of one being very processed and effected while one being 100 percent raw as a sort of deeper message about the unrealness of music now a days and how different thing can actually be finally rather then what has happened when was first sung.

We decided to cover celebrity skin by hole for this due to the line structure being split up in the verses by the riff making the split up of lines alot easier. Then for them to sing together in the choruses to give this more mixed sound and almost to show how everything can be covered up by techniques and production to make everything sound better and different to the artist that recorded it.

I Feel like this really helped me creatively and could be a good vice to go back into in the future if I am ever stuck on how to write anything.

Here I was using the metazone as a preamp being boasted by the tube screamer to create and amp in a way but similar to HM2 knocked loose hardcore sound then I was using the pitch shifter going up and octave and the chorus next to it turned all the way up then pressing both at once to create this crazy pitch fluctuating whammy sounds to almost create an accent of noise with my guitar

the big thing to work on was the transition between sections as most parts of the song have different bpms and time signatures the way we went around doing this was just playing the last and first 2 bars of each section. Doing this repeatedly helped and eventually made each section alot easier

we also went into this thinking of more sections I then came up with a verse after the first chorus that used the same chords as the chorus but in a different pattern this same out well and suited the song so as a group we decided to use this

we approached this by bringing the oddest objects we could potentially make sounds with. bryn bought in this spinning tube which makes a pitch depending how fast you spin it.

we instantly thought that this sounded bit like the vocal part in the intro for sweet escape by Gwen Stefani so then we went on doing a cover with this and having the found sound being the intro vocal part

this could be very good for making my own music because inspiration can come from anything especially from sounds around us and everything in life makes a noise and a sound that could be used in a song or find inspiration from when it comes to songwriting

Physical conditions - due to being born earlier I have alot of physical conditions that effect energy and breathing at times

This could be a limitation to get over when it comes to being a musician
