To survive, it wasn't easy. Gena says, if anyone was seen crying, the Nazi soldiers would shoot them. You had to act tough and strong in order to survive. On September 1st, 1939, it was the first official day of the Second World War. Then, Gena's home was bombed in Poland, and that caused great resistance.

Gena decided to start publicly speaking to young children, and others, educating them about the Holocaust after liberation. She even wrote an autobiography, titled: "I Light A Candle." I infer that this book talks about her experiences she went through during these traumatic times. 

When Gena and around 100 other women survived the Gas Chamber, this filled these women with great joy. This kind of joy was rare during these times, despite all of the commotion going on in the world. Therefore, this must've felt like such of a breakthrough for these women. Gena, got confused why all the other girls were celebrating after they got released out of the gas chamber. "I just never realized I was in the gas chamber..." Gena says. It must've felt so relieving when these women found out the chamber didn't work. Some people might recognize Gena because she nursed Anne Frank when she was suffering from Typhus. "I washed her face, gave her water to drink, and I can still see her face, her hair, and how she looked."  Gena says. Gena also had close family members that she unfortunately lost due to strict and brutal Holocaust rules. Her sister was shot because she was caught smuggling food into a labor camp. She had to go through incredibly traumatizing experiences throughout the time of the Holocaust. Although this was, Gena was able to survive 4 concentration camps. She survived Plasov camp around 1944. Then, in the winter of 1944, Gena and her family were moved from Plasov to infamous Auschwitz concentration camp. After Auschwitz, they went on a "death march" and went to Buchenwald, then to Burgen Belsen, where they'd be liberated around 1945.
