Through the quote, "reading sensitive and lengthy explorations of people's lives, ... literally putting yourself into another person's position -- [into] lives that could be more difficult, more complex... can lead to more empathy and understanding of other lives," one's ability to empathize allows the reader to see beyond the literature and develop characters that exceed typical black and white standards. Temptations often steer round characters in the wrong direction, establishing their greatest desires which later transform into their greatest fears. Having read pieces of literature such as Dr. Faustus, Sir Gawain & the Green Knight, and Julius Caesar, one finds their ability to trace man's decisions and sympathize with characters as their desires for knowledge, true honor, and ambition transfigures their character into greed, shame, and tyranny.
